Years ago, back in the early days of twitter I used to tweet everything I read. I’m trying to spend less time online and more time reading this year. So I thought I would start a thread of every book I finish this year. #ReadIn2025
Told @specsaversuk.bsky.social when I booking I need to stay in my wheelchair. Reminded them when I arrived and told its on my notes. 5 minutes later asked “can you transfer?”. Unsurprisingly I still couldn’t. Also they couldn’t do OCT as inaccessible but tried to charge for it! #EverydayAbleism

I hate the phrase “gentle reminder”

In bed after a very chilled NYD. I love the one day a year I don’t see a single other person.

Tonight my Dad and I went for a very long walk to look at people’s Christmas lights. Something we started in 2020 when gatherings were difficult and have kept up. Definitely few lights this year but we saw some lovely one and it was cold Christmassy fun

I miss having fandom friends. I lurk in a tiny niche fandom thats mostly on one website. It’s currently having a bit of drama. The fandom rep in related fandoms is of people being nice and it never has drama so this is big. I want to discuss it with someone

Yesterday as I was paying at dentist one of the receptionists asked if I have a Christmas tree. When I said no she acted like that was the saddest thing she’d ever heard. Yet another example of how being in a wheelchair changes people’s reactions. #everydaydisablism

🧵I have carers funded by the NHS to apply my compression each day. Today the funding body sent a nurse who does carer skills training to check its being done right. We’ve met a few times before but not for several years. 1/?

Shingles can do one

Mum and I went to see an NT live screening of Prima Facie this evening. A one woman play and such a powerful performance.

@green-knight.bsky.social was meaning to get in touch but i’m in week 4 of shingles so couldn’t. Just saw your DW post. Will be your way for a weekend in Oct if you fancy doing a museum one of the days. I have a couple in mind

I’ve had shingles for three weeks. I’m recovering and I managed to do some stuff I’d been looking forward to. But I’m sore, itchy and tired. And my wheelchair is making the pain worse.

Trying to find out access info from a company who organise holidays with care for disabled people. They keep brushing aside my questions with variants on “our holidays are accessible” and the more they say that the less I believe it.

Reading the new Zadie Smith book, haven’t read one in a few years. Does she normally write such short chapters? I’ve read 9 chapters but less than 30 pages.

Earlier today I had a conversation about when I started doing something (2004) and how later this year I’ll have been doing it for 20 years. This was with people who I didn’t know but who do the same thing. Later I got recognised by the organisers for 19 years involvement 1/2

Bumped into an old school friends mum in the supermarket queue. We talked for those few mins. I asked after her daughter, she asked after my mum. She said give your mum my love, I said give S mine. We said our goodbyes. Two mins later I bumped into her and my mum chatting in the car park.

I’m not actively decluttering (I did some pretty major decluttering last year when most of my flat had to packed up) but I am trying to focus on using the things I have. It’s an interesting experience and making me think a lot. I hope it’ll help with some of my overwhelm

Mum and I went to see the National Theatre live screening of Nye at the cinema tonight. It was so good! It’s based on the true story of the founder of the NHS and made me want to learn more about it #NTLiveNye

6 weeks ago my powerchair tech came to replace various consumable parts (having taken over a month to get them) 4 out of 6 parts they’d been given were the wrong sort for my chair. 2+ weeks ago the right parts were due in. They haven’t turned up and we can get no update from the manufacturer.

@green-knight.bsky.social hey want to put a date in the diary to meet up?

A DWP officer came and spoke at a meeting I was at earlier. As part of that she briefly (and very confidently) gave an explanation of how the WCA process for disabled UC claimants works. Which she got wrong.

Just got my hair cut. It looks fine, good even. But it’s not what I asked for and is shorter than I wanted. I was very clear I wanted to keep it that length. 🤬

Because my disability makes it hard to go away for more than a couple of nights I sometimes do “holiday at home.” I don’t do the things I normally do and do a mixture of days out and chilling at home. I’m doing holiday at home now and thought it might be good to share what it looks like/how it works
