1/3 Emma Cons was a social reformer, acutely aware of the link between alcohol and poverty. In 1880 she took over the “Old Vic”, renamed the Royal Victoria Coffee and Music Hall where she provided a mixed entertainment of drama, concerts and lectures in a temperance setting.

St Luke’s Church in Chelsea was consecrated on the 18th October 1824. The nave, 60ft high, is the tallest of any parish church in London and the tower reaches a height of 142 feet.
Here it is in a photograph taken in the 1890s for a magic lantern slide.

This is Queen Caroline’s funeral procession from Hammersmith. She lived by the river, estranged from her husband, King George lV. The procession included an incongruous medley of charity-girls and Latymer-boys, strewing flowers in the mud “(Image from Wellcome Institute)

Rescued from the bombed ruins of Holland House in Kensington are 8 extraordinary handwritten ‘dinner books’, a record of the 77,000 names who dined there from 18 May 1799 – 11 April 1806. This was an influential salon for some of Europe’s most influential people to meet.
