Mare street South of Well st junction late 17th c & early 18thC diarist Celia Fiennes lived here with her 7 servants. Celia Fiennes was born in Newton Tony, Wiltshire on the 7 June 1662 and died on 10 April 1741 in Hackney aged 78.

Front elevation from Mare Street, also showing corner of No 86 to the south.Became Ede House, a former police section house, which was built on part of the site of the demolished Clifton House on Mare Street, Hackney. The site was part of the grounds of the former Clifton House, a grand residence likely rented by the Rebello family from around 1750 and purchased by David Alves Rebello shortly before his death in 1796. Clifton House was eventually demolished between the two World Wars. Ede House, a police section house (accommodation for police officers), was constructed on a portion of the site after Clifton House was pulled down.

Haunt of the ‘London Burkers’ bodysnatchers.The Birdcage Pub (also formerly known as ‘The Bird Cage’) has been in continuous use as a public house since at least 1760. It was in this pub that 14-year-old Carlo Ferrier was last seen by witnesses prior to his death in 1831. When anatomists at King’s College London examined Ferrier’s body, they expressed concerns that the boy had not died of natural causes. Suspicion soon fell on a gang of body snatchers who based their operation at 3 Nova Scotia Gardens, situated across the street from The Bird Cage Pub. This gang, known as the London Burkers, comprised John Bishop, Thomas Williams, Michael Shields and James May. According to subsequent records from their Old Bailey trial, Bishop and Williams frequented The Bird Cage often, and they were identified by witnesses from the pub as the men who had carried Ferrier’s body out of their home in a sack.In November 1831, Bishop, Williams and May were arrested and subsequently tried for the murder of Ferrier. Although he did not confess to the murder, Bishop did confess to stealing 500-1,000 bodies over a span of twelve years. Found guilty of murder, Bishop and Williams were executed outside Newgate Gaol on 5 December 1831, reportedly in front of a crowd of 30,000 people. Bishop and Williams may have found it rather fitting that their bodies were given to two institutions for dissection. The London Burkers’ case, resulted in increased concern over the prevalence of murder and bodysnatching to compensate for the lack of corpses available for anatomists. This is why, in part at least, the London Burkers are responsible for the 1832 Anatomy Act, which aimed to reduce the need for illegally obtained bodies by permitting anatomists to dissect any body that went unclaimed by friends or family for private burial.Amy Janis Layers of London The Huguenot Connection: The pub’s name is believed to derive from the 17th-cen…

School children leaving Dalston bus depot in Ivydene Road, mid l920's Ivydene Road in Hackney was a street with houses and shops that was demolished in the late 1970s run down and squatted due to neglect to make way for a new housing estate Grand Union Crescent built late 1980s, alongside Trederwen Road and the old Dalston bus garage which was a Militia Barracks, as part of urban redevelopment in that part of East London. The road no longer exists but ran from Trederwen Road, west of Lansdowne Drive.

Technically Bethnal Green as it's just over the border marked by BOUNDARY Street, but it was so close to St Leonard's Shoreditch that most people referred to the Nichol as in Shoreditch

The History of Clissold House Record by Lucy Madison 1789 Samuel Hoare brought his family to Stoke Newington from Ireland in the mid 18th century and settled in a house in Paradise Row on Stoke Newington Church Street. The Hoares were successful bankers - the family’s Irish banking business later became part of Lloyds Bank - and, as Quakers, members of the family campaigned for the abolition of slavery and for prison reform. Stoke Newington in the 18th century was known for its non-conformist religious views. In around 1790, Samuel’s son Jonathan Hoare leased land next to St Mary’s Old Church and began to lay out an estate. By 1793 he had built the mansion, then known as Paradise House. It is rumoured that clay for some of the bricks used to build the house was dug from two pits which are now the Clissold Park lakes, though this has never been proven. The surrounding areas remained as agricultural fields and meadows.You have to imagine that when Clissold House was built around 1790 that this area was still predominantly rural, with fields and meadows and a few houses along Church Street. The parkland area which later became Clissold Park was enclosed by the New River and was a grazing area called Newington Common, and the area around the ponds was woodland.At the time Paradise House was built it would have looked pretty impressive, perched on its mount surrounded by open land. The ground here was built up into a carriageway so that the house looks like is perched on top of a small knoll. It is thought that the house was designed from the outside to appear as a feature in the landscape, which was very fashionable at the time.The house is unusual in its design, with two storeys on the west side but three storeys on the east, and its design has been attributed to Jonathan’s nephew, the architect and botanist Joseph Woods, but as he was only 17 when the house was built this seems disputable. Dalston was a less important settlement further east. In 1865, the North London Railway opened a major new station named Dalston Junction, which connected directly to the City of London at Broad Street. The area around this important new station subsequently became known by its name, and the name "Dalston" eventually replaced "Kingsland" as the general name for the district.

Regularly walked down Scriven street to the doctors in the 60s. Can't recall where exactly the doctors was but it went anyway when they built the flats.
