Insane. Rich Chinese man from Xinjiang had over 20 kids in California through surrogacy, kept them in his mansion, abused them, lost almost all of them to forester families, and is still allowed to have more babies.
More than a dozen children—most of whom were born to surrogate mothers—were found in an L.A. mansion. Ava Kofman reports on the mysterious couple behind this story. newyorkermag.visitlink.me/VOPv86

Video game is actually the only logical medium for this one of the most overrated franchises. First movie was fantastic but then they just copied and pasted it three more times with increasingly comical fights. Might as well just call it Captain Underworld and have him join the avengers.
Official trailer for the upcoming 'John Wick' video game 🎮

I expected the cuts would be bad but I'm honestly stunned and sickened seeing how many great journalists the Washington Post just lost. People who nailed huge investigations, documented war zones, exposed horrific crimes, dropped all at once for failures they did not cause.

From X’s head of product. Is this the first time someone from Twitter/X confirms it? I thought it was only a theory in the past

Finally decided to listen to Lao A's content (the guy who coined the term "kill line") and it's insane how many false claims he made just a couple of minutes in: 21% of Americans are illiterate; 93-day average medical appointment wait time; companies would fire you if you get sick. Phenomenal stuff.

The image and headline they chose for that Newsweek article on DSA and China were definitely clickbait but it was an interesting read. One thing that really stood out to me about last year's (and the ongoing) China craze in the US is how much it resembles the narratives that Beijing has been pushing

THREAD: Viral misinformation on US capture of Nicolas Maduro - 4 January

This video, shared by Alex Jones and others, falsely claims to show millions of Venezuelans in Caracas celebrating Maduro's capture.

In fact, it shows anti-Maduro protests in July 2024 over a highly disputed election.

Interesting how opposing factions of the Chinese internet have found positive angles in the Venezuela news: For critics of Beijing, the US taking out foreign dictators is always welcome news; while pro-gov't nationalists say this sets a precedent for China to invade Taiwan in a similar manner.

How does a viral social media post snowball into a global fake news story? @wenhao.bsky.social retraces the path, one misleading report at a time, in this piece about China's alleged law to curb online misinformation.

"In total, of the four sources MoneyWise listed to prove the existence of a new Chinese influencer law, none were primary sources . . . they were all news articles based on other news articles based on other news articles. Eventually, Yahoo Finance reposted the MoneyWise piece"
A new Chinese law regulating influencer speech has gotten applause from social media users and commentators who want similar policies in their own countries. But the truth is far from what's in the news and it's a sad reflection of our internet and media space.

Remember that flashy new Chinese law about fining influencers 100k RMB for spreading bad information? It doesn't exist, it was made up by a Facebook page called Enséñame de Ciencia and @wenhao.bsky.social has a great breakdown of why you *think* it does
