From #marialeptin, president of the European Research Council (#erc, @ERC_Research). There are two threats to #academicfreedom. One is the kind of direct ideological pressure from heads of state like Viktor Orbán and Donald Trump. The other is a more insidious "web of incentives" self-imposed by […]

What is the most profitable industry in the world, this side of the law? Not oil, not IT, not pharma.

It's *scientific publishing*.

We call this the Drain of Scientific Publishing.

AGREE furiously with @samuelmoore.org (Radical Open Access) the 2012 Finch report was a very destructive document for OA. The commercialisation of OA: journals need quick processing, publish as many as possible, little intervention of humans. This is an anathema to scholar led publishing #OASPA2025

just had this convo with my colleage @barbarahissa.bsky.social - we have too many examples of wonderful, open infrastructures that unfortunately are not being used by researchers - how to engage them?
I haven't seen too much on author engagement in the discussions around the construction of European Diamond OA infrastructures. I would love to know the organic appetite for all of these services and/or any incentives that are being used to 'drive' their uptake.

Same with commercial proprietary software when we could have been investing in people and building our own infrastructures.
Interesting times have happened over the last twenty years while we have wasted millions of pounds in public resources pursuing commercialised forms of open access publishing.

Chemistry: It is impossible to have equitable no-apc open access for high quality journals.

High Energy Physics: Hold my bosons..
SCOAP3 in a nutshell. The effort is collaborative - not just shared funds. Used particle physics agreements as basis for the #OpenScience governance.
