I was disappointed to see in an all female Facebook group the mixed reaction a woman received on a post about being harassed by men in cars. Many defended/excused it or attacked the OP for overreacting. I find this baffling. How can we stand up to misogeny when other women stand against us.

Why should British companies be deprived of the talent that just happened to have been born outside of Britain.
I’ve lived here 9 years but my accent and my name give me away.
In the US I was always German, and I’ve barely lived in Germany since the age of 10.
When am I allowed to call the UK home?

On the topic of my immigration status, the part of the questions that bothers me is that there is an assumption for these people that I should be in my “own” country, why am I here, stealing a job? I imagine Scots will have applied when the hired me, maybe I was the most qualified candidate?

With rhetoric around “protecting our borders” and “British first” I get a lot of awkward questions all of a sudden from people I meet, “why are you here”, “couldn’t you find work in Germany”. I have lived here 9 years and have never had this much attention on my immigration status.

With the stories of the US deporting perfectly legal visa and green card holders because they were publicly disagreeing with the government, and the UK governments new immigration plans, I feel I shouldn’t be so certain that my settled status is immovable, and maybe should be careful what I say.

I guess privacy concerns seem less urgent when you think you can trust the government with your best interests but at this point I don’t necessarily see that as a given, even here in the UK.
May 15, 2025 at 6:46 AM
As a teenager I never quite understood my German family and friends’ obsession with privacy, having always thought, “well I have nothing to hide”. But over the last few years with all the political shifts and the wars and arrests over nothing in the US, I’ve realised just how important privacy is.

Even worse than categorically believing everything AI says and asking it about everything, is getting AI to check your CV or read your text messages before you send them, you are teaching AI your data.
May 15, 2025 at 6:40 AM
This is why I never use AI, I just don’t believe that it doesn’t get influenced. I do see the Google AI roundup when you search something but if anything only use it to check out links, looking for more reputable sources.
Oh my god

Really no idea why cars have to be so fancy these days, I miss the old 2007 Ford Focus that had a CD player and a sketchy radio I learned to drive on.
Touch screens on cars worsen response time significantly worse than drink driving or being high:

The one benefit of getting up at 4am to take the 6am train to Falkirk on a Saturday to volunteer at an ultra marathon is that you get the train to yourself.
At least I’m not running it 😬.

I’m unbelievably impressed with the increases in the standard of rugby played by both Wales and Scotland over the last 8 years. The Scottish team I first watched in 2017 have come incredibly far and I’m seeing some great rugby.

I keep having ads crop up on news articles I read and websites I visit about “no fuss cremation” and “easy funeral service”. Given that cookies are what they are, I am a little concerned that my browsing history suggests I am the target audience for cremation and funeral planning.

Horrid. Absolutely horrible. How the is this happening. How the hell is he allowed to make executive orders of this magnitude. Sorry for the language, I am flabbergasted.

I’m glad the news about NHS England has come before I spent a significant amount of time on an idea for a masters by research that was partly on the structure of NHS England…

This story is major. Here's why it matters: 1) It creates an interesting precedent. Interactions with chatbots are FOIable. 2) It shows how our public officials are relying on these technologies, and that's a public debate that is healthy to engage in. But even more importantly 1/
🚨 @newscientist.com SCOOP: I've exclusively obtained Peter Kyle's interactions with ChatGPT using FOI laws - in what I believe may be a world-first transparency release. The chatbot said "Lack of Government or Institutional Support" slowed UK AI adoption www.newscientist.com/article/2472...

3) It reminds us that these technologies are not neutral. They are created by powerful companies with financial interests. When you ask these technologies about the technology itself, they come up with very rosy pictures. They push for their own interests. Of course they'll say GDPR is a hurdle 2/
