Today's Exhibit of the Day? A colossal amethyst geode! At ~13 ft (4 m) tall & 9,000 lbs (4,082 kg), it's as heavy as 3 compact cars. Formed 135 million years ago, it started as colorless quartz—becoming purple after millennia of natural radiation, heat, & trace contaminants.

Characters and storyline come first, but I knew very early on that I wanted to write #Odder in free verse.

Verse just felt right for a book about the ocean—there's so much a writer can do with line breaks, rhythm, and sound. 💙🦦 #mglit @mackidsbooks.bsky.social

Helping Writers and Readers Cope
The themes in picture books are intended to assist children in dealing with the world around them, and authors benefit in the same way. These three picture books Egils gave me for Christmas are illustrative examples. Hike by Pete Oswald, The Rough Patch by Brian Lies, and Zen Shorts by Jon Muth are beautifully illustrated treatises on finding solace in the natural world, resolving pain and anger after tragedy, and developing inner harmony in the face of perceived hardships.
