The 1864 cyclone in India pushed the British to institutionalize meteorology not to protect coastal communities, but to strengthen colonial control. Cyclone science evolved within power, not apart from it.

We began an academic project at Oulu Univ, Finland, exploring #commonisation #decommonisation as historical processes to draw lessons for future #ecologicalgovernance.
We now continue this dialogue at Kagawa University, Takamatsu, Japan, from 26 September to 2 October 2025.

The Khasi tribes of Meghalaya NE India, build very long bamboo bridges across rivers and valleys. These natural flyovers passed through dense jungle and wetlands & connected remote villages, averting the danger of wildlife. It symbolises a deep bond between the Khasi people and their environment.

This might be impressive gene-editing but it’s nonsense as “de-extinction”. They’re not the same and they can’t be. At the end of this piece, the company basically admits that it’s just a flashy claim to drive money into their company. This is not conservation, & it diverts money from work that is.
