I’ve heard it said that in the mid 20th century, many city planning programs were moved from university architecture departments (where the professors know how to draw) to the government department (where they don’t). The result was cities with more parking and less beauty.

If you are a young person who wants to become a great city planner, you need some real technical skills. Learning to draw (a skill often neglected in planning schools) is a good start.

Lately, I favor installing benches on wide downtown sidewalks perpendicular to the flow of passersby. Creates a little "walking eddy" room [I just made that term up] to encourage neighbors to pause and talk. Example from Mount Lebanon, PA. What do you think?
