In June 1956, 18-year-old David Hoadley borrowed his parents car in Bismarck, SD and set off to look for thunderstorms and tornadoes by himself, without computer forecast models, without cell phones, the internet, or even interstate highways. Today he announced the end of his stormchasing career.

Looks like the tornado and/or parent circulation passed across the dense near-NW parts of St. Louis. Lots of tree and roof damage evident, w/some at-least-partial structure collapses. The St. Louis area is highly tornado-vulnerable: an 1896 twister caused 255 deaths.

Quick edit of a tornado NW of Matador, Texas, today. I made a poor repositioning decision earlier and was in catch-up mode the west side of it trying to get back in the lead. But I honestly really like the lighting while the rear flank downdraft was gracious enough to leave it visible. #stormchasing

Despite being an essential part of a severe weather forecaster’s toolkit, hodographs have a notorious learning curve. So, I have put together this 3D animation as a visual aid to help those new to hodographs understand what they’re showing.
