Moreover, Andrew placed great emphasis on the full and prompt publication of his work. His major volumes the excavations at Nicopolis and Dichin were pioneering in the late antique Balkans for their emphasis on artefactual, faunal and archaeobotanical remains, alongside the structural evidence. 4/

Excavation at the late Roman city was accompanied by field survey & subsequent projects at the fort of Dichin & the hilltop of Dobri Dyal. The scale of Andrew’s excavation seasons is perhaps unsurpassed by any UK overseas project & a generation of students gained experience through the project. 3/

His ground-breaking fieldwork at and around the site of Nicopolis ad Istrum in Bulgaria was vital in the emerging study of the late antique city as well as being one of the first major British research projects carried out in Eastern Europe. 2/
