Takanakuy is held in some parts of Peru where entire villages ring in the new year by getting drunk and beating the crap out of each other. The idea is to settle old scores and grudges, and start the new year with a clean slate. The results are legally binding. It's unclear how healthy this is, but it certainly can't make political debates any worse.

It has existed since 62 AD and has been found all over Europe, the Middle East, Asia minor and North Africa. However, nobody knows its real meaning or origin. It could also be an early meme. It was also featured in the worst movie ever made by mankind, Christopher Nolan's Tenet.

Roland the Farter was King Henry II's royal court jester who was famous for performing an act called the "saltum, siffletum, Pettum" (a jump, a whistle, and a tart, simultaneously) for the king's court every Christmas. He was apparently so good at it that the king gave him 110 acres of land in Suffolk.

Krampus is the anti-Santa Claus. We all know about jolly St. Nick rewarding good kids with presents on Christmas. But in pre-Christian folklore, he was also accompanied by Krampus, a "half goat, half-demon" who would punish bad kids. He's depicted as dark and hairy, with goat horns, cloven hooves and a long, pointed tongue. Variations show him with birch branches for whipping naughty kids and a sack in which to carry them to hell. So, uh... Merry Christmas!

Lake Natron is a blood red salt lake in Tanzania that is so salty, hot and alkaline (with a pH above 12), that any animal that dies in or near it is calcified, or turned into a salt statue.

The dodo was actually intelligent and inedible, contrary to popular belief. They went extinct mainly due to habitat loss and the introduction of invasive species by explorers, rather than being hunted. It didn't help that they had no fear of humans, like penguins today. They were initially named "Walghvoghel" meaning "tasteless bird" by early Dutch explorers. And as members of the family Columbidae, which includes pigeons, they were probably of above-average avian intelligence.

The world's largest nature reserve for penguins was created unintentionally. The Falkland Islands were heavily land-mined in the Falklands War, making the beaches off-limits to humans and large predators. But penguins are not heavy enough to trigger the land mines, so the beaches became a safe haven for thousands of them.

Overtoun Bridge causes dogs to jump off it for no apparent reason. Built in 1859 in Dumbarton, Scotland, it spans a ditch 50 feet below. But since the 1950s, there have been hundreds of incidents of dogs suddenly leaping off it, as though compelled by an unseen force, ending up injured or worse. Some blame the supernatural, but many scientific investigations have failed to find an explanation.

It rains frozen iguanas in Florida. They're an invasive species and are not used to winter weather, so they just freeze and fall out of trees - sometimes onto people, causing injuries. So local weather reports will issue warnings to the public to watch out for falling iguanas. The iguanas aren't harmed, they thaw out as the weather warms and everything goes back to normal- or whatever "normal" is in Florida.

Dr. John Hinds, aka "The Flying Doctor," rode one of the world's fastest ambulances. Irish Road Racing has some of the fastest, longest and most dangerous motorcycle races in the world. Dr. Hinds followed racers on his superbike loaded with medical equipment, hitting 340 kmph (210 mph) to get to injured riders in time, and saved countless lives. In 2015, he was killed while responding to a crash. He was 37. Thousands of bikers joined his funeral motorcade. A year later, an air ambulance was launched, the helicopter named after his callsign, Delta 7.

The world's worst traffic jam lasted 12 days. In August 2010, China's National Highway 110 became heavily gridlocked, trapping thousands of vehicles over a 100 km stretch. A miniature economy of sorts was created around the jam, as local villagers began selling water and food at steep prices to the stranded motorists, who could only move about 1 km per day and slept in their cars at night.

Coral Castle in Florida is arguably the world's heaviest love letter built by Edward Leedskalnin (1887-1951) after his fiancée left him a day before their wedding. He spent 30 years bullding it all by himself, using 1,000 tons of oolitic limestone blocks cut to unusually high accuracy, using homemade tools and no mortar or formal training. When asked why he built it, he would only reply "Sweet Sixteen, " referring to his fiancée.

The Pepsi 349 Incident was probably the worst PR disaster in corporate history. In the Philippines in 1992, Pepsi printed numbers in bottlecaps that won prizes, including a top prize of a million pesos if you got the number 349. Unfortunately, 800,000 extra "349" bottlecaps were mistakenly put into circulation, and Pepsi couldn't pay up (the prize value totalled $32 billion). This led to lawsuits, public outrage, protests, riots, and even bomb and arson attacks that lett live dead.

Mad Hatter Disease or Erethism affected hatmakers in the 19th century. They handled mercury to treat felt while making hats, which led to mercury poisoning and brain damage. As a result, hatmakers were known for having eccentric personalities and jittery behavior; hence the phrase, "mad as a hatter," and the Lewis Carroll character.

A school of black neon tetra fish committed credit card fraud in 2023. YouTuber Mutekimaru has a motion tracking camera that inputs his pet fish's movements into a Nintendo switch, letting them "play" video games while the internet watched. I'ne fish even beat Pokemon Sapphire in 2020. However in 20R3, while Mutekimaru was away, the game crashed and loaded the main menu. The fish's inputs then opened the Nintendo eshop, added 500 yen to his account, exposed nis credit cara to the livestream, downloaded an N64 emulator, set up a payra, made purchases, and even changed his username to "ROWAWAWA·."
