I'm a researcher and designer of public services. I live in Brooklyn, NY.
I'll be at Code for America at the end of the month.

I'm hopeful to be in some necessary and timely conversations about what's happening in civic technology this year. Mostly, I would like to have a laugh and connect with others who are doing this work.

Let me know if you'll be there! 🌻

Lately, my brain feels like [ ] when I think about sharing any thoughts whatsoever on the internet.

So, instead, some pictures of my most recent ceramic pieces.

I can save you the several hours of attending my research workshop (which is fun and you should anyway) with the tl;dr that no one makes decisions based on data, so if you're a designer, or a design researcher, or a policy advocate you need to get good at relationships and stories.

Low on the list of things to complain about this week, but I feel like I've reached my limit on reading AI-generated articles and comments that people try to play off as their own written content.

The syntax alone (at least for now) is revealing.

This is so relatable. Fridays are both recycling and rubbish for me, which is a not insignificant reason I like Fridays.

I just heard the incredibly sad news that Vicky Teinaki has passed. Reading everyone's remembrances shows what a deep legacy she leaves. I learned so much from her, albeit online, over the years.

Thinking of her family, friends and the loss to our design community. β€οΈβ€πŸ©Ή

If you're watching LA on fire from afar and feeling devastated, like me, consider donating a meal to a firefighter.

This is a friend of a friend's restaurant. They're delivering meals (on bike) to firefighters twice a day. Click 'Order now' and choose 'Firefighter meal.'

My greatest (rofl) accomplishment of 2024:

I completed every @nytimes.com mini crossword puzzle this year.

Doing sufficient qualitative research for the purposes of making business decisions is neither particularly expensive nor difficult if you actually care about people and want to learn about them.

Unfortunately, you will end up learning a lot of inconvenient stuff.

This is still somewhat tailored to people who work in tech, but I'd highly recommend Giles Turnbull's book, 'The agile comms handbook.'

It’s silly how this actually may be really effective.

I don’t think I would have done half the things I’ve done if I’d known ahead of time how utterly unprepared I was to go do them.

I've worked for a 100+ year old organization with thousands of employees and (when I joined) a <1 year old organization with less than 5.

There's good sides to both, but I have to say, intentionally shaping a culture while sitting closely alongside a small group of folks, it's kind of wonderful. πŸ’™

As form designers we're in a unique position to connect the dots – this is where the magic happens. And form design is a team effort.

It's silly (in the best way) things like this that make me miss the UK.
I am begging you to send me a picture of your favourite fish and chip shop - past or present. Bonus points if it includes commercial art of a fish that is unreasonably cheerful at the prospect of being eaten.

Particularly as someone who works from home, I find giving and receiving mentorship is such a meaningful way to foster deeper and broader connections, learn through conversation, and practice asking for help or leaning into advice.

Excited for this in 2025.

I'm excited to be accepted into the 2025 Technologists for the Public Good Mentorship Program as a mentor for the next 5 months!

It's funny how the imposter syndrome can creep in when anything like this happens. I'm getting better at putting space between the feeling and who I am, though πŸ’™

Reason 32817 why I love my neighborhood.

There’s a circulation group who sells goods for $1-15 within a handful of post codes in Brooklyn. I got this little planter, some garden shears and a puzzle. And when they came by (on bike!), they picked up a humidifier and some curtains to recirculate.

I think the basics were I had to use their logo on the slides and they had the right to record and share my slides for up to a year (I think), but otherwise I wasn’t handing over the content for their exclusive use etc.
