Some lightning strikes detected around Lexington to our southwest...

Temepratures will stay somewhat mild into the weekend but will slide coming out of it. I'm not entirely convinced we see snow this weekend in central Virginia but the prospects aren't being entirely elimintated. Stay tuned.

A personal favorite. "A New Season" and "Hotel Womb" are IMO the best tracks on the album.
On this win 1988, The Church released their fifth studio album “Starfish” featuring singles “Under the Milky Way" “Reptile" “Destination" and “Antenna"

A few random Friday thoughts:

1) All rain Sunday into early Monday for central Virginia.

2) Upper 50s/lower 60s for highs next week.

3) Pollen season starts in a few weeks. Get your OTC allergy meds ready!

4) Daylight Saving Time (clocks ahead) begins Sunday, March 8.

Enjoy your Friday. 🙂

State drought monitor for central Virginia remains unchanged with almost the entire area under severe drought conditions. This is a far better gauge of our drought versus climate numbers as this method analyzes soil moisture and snow melt. Despite what snow melt we've had, we still need more rain!

Peak wind gusts so far today…
Wintergreen: 64mph
Carter Mountain: 52mph
CBS19 Studio/Giraffe: 46mph
February 7, 2026 at 8:21 PM
Wintergreen has already recorded a 64 mph wind gust today.
February 7, 2026 at 1:42 PM
Winds will pick up significantly after midnight and not only gust up to 55mph (or more) through Saturday night, but they'll also drive wind chills below zero through Sunday morning. Please dress warmly when outdoors and bring the pets inside!
February 7, 2026 at 1:49 AM
It's gonna be a VERY windy and cold Saturday. Wind chills during the day for most will be in the teens & single digits; they'll dip below zero Saturday night.

For the Blue Ridge Mountains: *Cold Weather Warning* & *High Wind Watch* in effect from 4am Saturday through Sunday morning.

Back at it today with something resembling a voice. Still not 100% but much better than last week.

The flu is brutal this year, friends.

Given the temperature swings and prolonged cold the last few weeks, it's gonna be one heck of a highway pothole season when everything thaws out.

Sometime during the past few weeks between cold outbreaks & sleet storms I reached a thousand followers on this app. A heartfelt thanks to each of you for putting your trust in me for your weather information. I do not take it for granted.

Enjoy this picture of my recent foster-fail cat Shadow!

Dry air wins.
Snow stays south.
Enjoy your Saturday.
January 31, 2026 at 7:19 PM
Alright, central Virginia friends. Storm trends keep going south (literally). I'm thinking anyone that sees an inch or more snow accumulation Saturday will be along & south of U.S. Route 60 in Nelson & Buckingham Counties. It's entirely possible some in the area don't even see a single flake.
January 30, 2026 at 8:07 PM
Trend of weekend storm keeps going south which means less snow for central Virginia. Still a nuisance storm if anything but the highest accumulations will be closer to the VA/NC border.
January 29, 2026 at 7:49 PM
*First run at a snowfall map for snow from Saturday morning to late Saturday night:

Between 1-3" of light, fluffy snow for central Virginia with higher amounts south of US Highway 60; this storm will be all snow with no sleet or ice.

Forecast adjustments are possible in the days ahead.
January 29, 2026 at 2:41 AM
1) Cold weather advisory in effect again tonight: wind chills down to 0° for central VA, -12° for the mountains.
2) Daytime highs will ease from now into the weekend.
3) Will we get snow this weekend? I'm not entirely convinced we will but I'm not giving a definitive "no" just yet.
January 27, 2026 at 9:27 PM
1) We could break several record lows in the days ahead.
2) Wind chills tonight at times down to -10° for most, -15° for C'ville + Albemarle & Nelson, -25° for mountains & the Valley. Dress warmly and bring the pets inside!
3) Could we get more snow this weekend? Possibly.
January 26, 2026 at 10:52 PM
The bulk of the precipitation is done falling in central Virginia.
Now, the cold will be taking over. Surfaces are becoming VERY slick.
