Pennsylvania is not the Midwest.
Wednesday night was another winner for the Northern Lights. Was able to catch three substorms which contained colors and pillars visible to the naked eye.

It's definitely gonna be a jumbo coffee kinda day.

It was another great Aurora Borealis show tonight on Skyline Drive! Thankfully the skies cleared just in the nick of time. #aurora

Winds have already gusted over 30mph in Syria (Madison Co.) and Free Union (Albemarle Co.) this morning. Expect winds to stay gusty through Tuesday evening before easing somewhat for the midweek.

Fire danger will increase the next few days as conditions dry out following this weekend's showers.

It’s nice to see some foliage holdouts across Central Virginia.

Check out how much colder temepratures are at 10pm Thursday compared to 10pm Wednesday.

Oof.

As expected: severe drought conditions are now showing up in parts of central Virginia (including Charlottesville). Our yearly rainfall deficit is now roughly five and a half inches. We need rain!

Our Carter Mountain weather station (FW5988) had a wind gust of 37mph about half an hour ago; this is the fastest gust recorded there all day.

Here's a different perspective of our lack of rain so far this October in Charlottesville. Days in green mark days of measurable rain. We haven't even seen a half-inch of rain all month.

I am hoping between one-half and one inch of rain will fall between now and midday Thursday.

With leaves at or near peak across central Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley, a wind forecast like this is NOT what you want to see if you have any hopes of checking out the foliage. There may not be many leaves left on the branches by the end of the week!

This Sunday marks the end of Daylight Saving Time. We'll do so locally by turning clocks BACK one hour. How will this affect sunrise and sunset times? The graphic below provides some insight.
October 28, 2025 at 6:19 PM
Rain Wednesday night into Thursday morning won't be a drought-buster but some places could see more than a half-inch. Halloween will be windy but dry for trick-or-treating and high school football games. The jury is still out on rain chances early next week...

Today's highest rainfall total (so far) is a whopping 0.07" in Troy, Fluvanna County. Woo.

Showers should be gone before midnight. Skies will clear afterward and Wednesday will be a sunny, cooler, and breezy day with elevated fire danger.

Looks like a great night ahead to check out the Orionids Meteor Shower in central Virginia. Skies will be clear and moonlight won't be an issue. Enjoy!

*If* these cirrus clouds stick around we could be in for a half-decent sunset tonight.

FWIW: sunset happens at 6:32pm tonight and Daylight Saving Time ends (clocks back one hour) Sunday, November 2.

Central Virginia football forecasts - both high school and college - are looking great this weekend! Remember that the sun may be warm but temperatures will cool quickly after sunset.

A morning walk on Observatory Hill on UVA grounds showed plenty of green and not many leaves changing color yet. Peak for Central Virginia tends to be the first week in November, while the higher elevations peak in mid to late October. #LeafPeeping

Still looking at clouds and breezy conditions through early tomorrow morning but sunshine should return to central Virginia's sky late tomorrow afternoon. I'll break down the very sunny work-week forecast coming up on the CBS19 News at 4pm.

Per Alexia Williams, Cassadie Stevens, and me: Grit Coffee’s pumpkin pie latte is WONDERFUL and also Charlottesville’s best pumpkin-related coffee.
