Check out this special issue on Social Investments in the welfare state. We do indeed find that this logic has deep roots but also show it is always intertwined with other logics and so it should be evaluated contextually.
In the first article,
@aludvig.bsky.social and Troels Krarup question if the social investment logic is really new by looking at similar utilitarian ideas in Danish welfare politics from 1880 to 1940, and they find that such logics have deep roots.

The rich are responsible for an outsized share of carbon emissions — the top 10% account for 48%.

And the gap is growing.

Since 1990, the richest 1% have increased their share of emissions by 13%, while the poorest 50% have seen theirs fall by 3%.

@klararaiber.bsky.social and I wrote a paper and it is published now! In this study in @actasociologica.bsky.social, we investigate willingness to perform small caregiving tasks for neighbors. We show that anticipated reciprocity increases willingness but previous caregiving experience does not(1/2)
In a new article, Ramaekers and Raiber advances our knowledge of neighbour caregivers by examining the impact of anticipated reciprocity and previous (negative) caregiving experience. They indicate that neighbours can form a safety net for those who cannot rely on family.
