This #90sTop30 pick reminded me that years ago, @davidkbruce.bsky.social and I had a bet over who'd be the first to write a second @toppermost.bsky.social post. I lost the bet and *still* haven't written another one. But David's Trumans Water piece was brilliant.

A great reminder of his brilliance. I grow more convinced over time that we have lost one of the greats.

I’m now off to listen to the Telefís albums (which are also fantastic of course…)

I did a deep dive into Hot Chocolate for @toppermost.bsky.social that was a mixed experience. I want to share this as a stand alone offering because it is extraordinary. You may already know it. It was Top Ten in 1973. I'd never come across it before.

Lovely stuff. My next Toppermost is going to be on Dollar. Going to do some research into their story first. I think they're an "interesting" couple. @toppermost.bsky.social

New article, definitely something for the social history fans - the monkey parade (or 'monkey run'). Teenagers promenading in towns and cities on Sunday evenings, flirting, cruising. It was dubbed the “monkey parade” or the “monkey run”.

If a whole article on Hot Chocolate feels a bit too much then can I ask you for 4 minutes to watch this video of the band looking fantastic doing Brother Louie. A song about a mixed race relationship in 1973 that spares no one. Remarkable.

One of the reasons society is in such deep shit is that not enough people know how good the Hot Chocolate/Mickie Most records are.

Don’t agree 100% but a great top ten all the same.

I would have included the crunchy garage of “Go Go Girl”, “Confetti Day” for its wholesale do over of Can’s “I Want More” and “Mindless Boogie”, maybe the only boogie tune to mention Jonestown.

Seal's "Crazy" is the product of being in an era when change was about to happen almost all at once. How does the music and lyrics of this, his first big hit, reflect the times? How is it still applicable now? Click through and read on!
Seal Sings “Crazy”
Released at a time when one era was clicking over into another, Seal's "Crazy" offered the best musical ingredients of eras past, while also introducing a new sound for the new decade of the 1990s. How do the music and lyrics tell a story together about tension, change, and what we need to survive?

Andrew, I'm clumsily and shamelessly choosing this Hot Chocolate collection because it fits the bill but also to allow me to share the link to a thing I've written on the band....
