💿 Closing Time
🎶 I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You

Following up hearing Rain Dogs with Closing Time in my Tom Waits listening journey sure was an experience.

So different from what he became, but no less affecting and entertaining, as proven here.

🗣️ Rain Tree Crow
🎶 Blackwater
🗓️ April 1991

"They've just rebadged it, you fool."

Japan were back together for one album and one album only, but boy did they make it count.

Blackwater was the biggest single, and with good reason. It's an absorbing and emotional gem.

The lyric I'm thinking about today:

"In the car he couldn't afford
They found his made-up name
On her ankle chain
So don't call, don't call her at home
She's fucking with a slip of a man
While the engine runs"

The Joni Mitchell lyric I'm thinking about today:

"I pulled into the Cactus Tree Motel to shower off the dust
And I slept on strange pillows of my wanderlust
I dreamed of 747s, over geometric farms
Dreams, Amelia, dreams and false alarms"

John Martyn's storytelling was almost always biographical.

On 'Grace & Danger', it was too much so; label owner and friend Chris Blackwell delayed its release for a year because it was too depressing.

45 years on from its release however, the melancholic rawness shines on 👇

🗣️ John Martyn
💿 Inside Out

I'm fast approaching the end of another fantastic year of discovery.

Martyn has been one of my favourite new-to-me artists, but still with considerable gaps in my listening.

His jazz-influenced record is next up...

🗣️ The Beloved
🎶 The Sun Rising
🗓️ February 1990

This isn't the only band, album, and song recommendations so gratefully received from our host, but it is amongst the very finest.

Acid house synths and beats above a hushed vocal make this an addictive tune, time and time again.

💿 Bad As Me
🎶 Hell Broke Luce

My final pick from the 21st Century just cracks the top 20.

If Bad As Me truly is Waits' farewell album, then what a triumphant goodbye it is. This is just one of many great songs that only Waits himself could deliver here.

Hands up if you'd be interested in a Sonic Youth #MusicChallenge in 2026 🙌

Thinking February or March for this one, if there's enough interest.

RTs appreciated.

Growing up, my brother and I didn't share much music. But Keane was a common love.

Even then, I hated the big hits. But certain songs were the most magical things I had ever heard of.

In particular, 'Untitled 1', with its ethereal synths is to my ears, a haunting masterpiece.

The lyric I'm thinking about today:

"And I was green, greener than the hill
Where flowers grow and the sun shone still
Now I'm darker than the deepest sea
Just hand me down, give me a place to be"

The Joni Mitchell lyric I'm thinking about today:

"People talk to tell you something
Or to take up space
Guess I'm only talking
To be talking to
Your pretty face
I don't talk much to anyone, but
You're a special case
For my special place"

Of course, I couldn't make it through the day without playing my favourite album by that band (or anyone else, for that matter).

Pink Floyd released 'The Endless River' #OnThisDay in 2014.

The band's final album, it largely comprises instrumental and ambient work from The Division Bell sessions two decades earlier.

One for the purists and hardcore fans, it is also a fitting conclusion to the band's story.

Another modern classic on the turntable.

I was going to go for something louder, brasher, rockier after Spirit Of Eden.

But nope. Instead, I opted for the exact opposite.

RIP Mark Hollis, forever and always ❤️🎶

When one of your favourite albums of all time isn't even your favourite album by that band.

From avant-garde jazz to top tier psychedelic rock.

The record cover is the only sunshine in these parts this morning, but the look in David Crosby's eyes says it all.

'If I Could Only Remember My Name' is one of those records which swallows you up for its duration.

Patti Smith's 'Horses' was released #OnThisDay in 1975.

The seminal album combined the emerging rawness of the punk scene with avant-garde experimentations, making for one of the bravest and most unique debuts of the decade.

Perhaps that's best exemplifies on the sprawling 'Birdland'.

Kicking off the record playing week with this absolute beauty.

Karma is the jazz record which most feels like a religious experience - opening my eyes, ears and minds to the wonder that is Pharoah Sanders.

I'll be diving so much deeper next year, but for now, this is on repeat.

It's not a turnaround on the scale of Dark Side Of The Moon, but I do believe my ears needed cleaning when I didn't enjoy Blood On The Tracks on first listen.

It's definitely the most consistent Bob Dylan record I've heard, and that base level is much higher than I realised.

🗣️ Mansun
🎶 Mansun's Only Love Song
🗓️ February 1997

One of the most audacious and ambitious debut albums of the decade could have had pretty much any song up for the accolade here.

But their only love song is also one of their best, and gets the nod today.

💿 Swordfishtrombones
🎶 Shore Leave

The first of four from the album that changed everything.

From beatnik storyteller to master of the weird, wonderful and everything in between.

And this song perfectly sums that up, with that sinister ending.

December is for the great Christmas movies - the classics, the modern favourites, childhood nostalgia et al.

But November, that's for the guilty pleasure that is Hallmark Christmas movies (and other similar networks).

Here's what we've watched, so you don't have to...
