not that we shouldn’t criticize public figures—we absolutely should. but rather than projecting expectations of perfection onto them, we should expect that they listen, understand and change. to admit the imperfections of the dead is to set reasonable standards for critiquing living public figures

while kirk was no gandhi or mlk, even those two figures have problematic aspects—yet their efforts were indispensible. when we make martyrs of people, it reinforces the expectation that public figures have to be perfect—or else one bigoted opinion devalues everything else they’ve said or done

our focus should not just be on individuals who engage in bigotry, but the culture, the system as a whole. people are not the best or worst things they said—but words hold weight. and simply pointing out kirk’s rough edges isn’t downplaying the horror that he had to go this way—it honors his memory
