When autumn came
peevishness kicked in—
slowly feeling
the roots
within me wither—
my zone of alarm
switched on
awaiting
the annual terror
of my shadow
taking over
through the winter
Now, seeing
the birds fly by
in a bright blue
cornflower sky,
