An intro! I’m TJ. I help people to do science. Currently, I do that by taking X-ray images and non-clinical CT scans of whatever they want to see inside of. Animals, plants, computer parts, fossils, and food are all fair game.
If you’ve ever wanted to learn about flow cytometry, here is your chance! Both in person and remote options available Aug. 27. events.cornell.edu/event/introd...

Pareidolia fun at work: The researcher and I saw two different faces in this slice of tomato. Either it’s a cyclops with two eyebrows, or it has a funny shaped nose.

The Cornell Chronicle has been absolutely killing it lately sharing stories of research funding that has been rescinded without notice. Pediatric heart pumps, tick borne disease tests, military nutrition, and cybersecurity projects. What is next?

I’m sitting outside, eating my lunch and listening to American Prometheus, which is chock full of little anecdotes about people whose names are attached to units or equations I’ve used. To wit, a very peripheral name got mentioned and I’m literally facing a building with that name on it.

If National snail day is not sufficient for your snail curiosity, don't worry we will have many more snails in our mollusk exhibit at PRI's Museum of the Earth, opening next week #NationalSnailDay 🐌🦑

This has always been my explanation of why I’m not a professor. If I want 3 full time jobs, y’all better pay me for three full time jobs.
IMHO one reason being a professor is stressful (and professors are constantly late and absent-minded) is that it's not just one job, it's three or four jobs in a trenchcoat.

Plowed away the past few days catching up on research stuff and now I'm even more behind on email and admin 😢

It never ends

Several studies in our lab involve chemically cleared brains. Finally took the time to have a photo shoot, so I can show in presentations. The cleared brain shines brightly ✨ under natural light.

All 4 of my NIH research grants are terminated. These were grants on MDR-TB treatment & strategies for supporting adolescents living w/ HIV. This is a massive waste of resources. I am heartbroken for my Harvard team, my partners in Peru, the next generation of scientists & our country. Shame.

A great workshop with @jaimiagray.bsky.social on using Slicer. I’ve been hoping to start supporting this software for our users, and this was a good kick to get me going!

OK, this is wild.

In September 2023, geophysicists across the world started monitoring a very odd signal coming from the ground under them.

It was picked up in the Arctic. And Antarctica. It was detected everywhere, every 90 seconds, as regular as a metronome, for *nine days*.

What the HELL?

Several years ago, I planted asparagus, to uninspiring results. Gave up on the vegetable garden. Yesterday, this. You never know what effort will someday bear fruit.

We microCT-scanned the young black bear cub we shared here last week. Undergrad Grace Vance's dissection was perfect so it's worth sharing here & eventually on MorphoSource. We had scanned the adult male skull years ago so for fun I recreated a digital version of the photo I had posted.🐻
