They're not Phainon's actual mind, but a different kind of space he built using his "hatred"
Since he's bound to it, his emotions and mental state INFLUENCE the scenery and the shape the seals take, but it's just a "reflection"

I've seen some people why electrical signal sequences were still listed as "active" even after they died in a cycle, that's because while they're not "responding" inside the sim cycle, they are still "running" and evolving

on one hand it's part of his healing process, on the other hand it's a clear sign of trauma, and he tries downplaying the effect this has on him by laughing about it, as he often does

It's not needed to understand his whole situation, but it's still crazy to me that, purely in-game, you can't know that "Phainon" has subconscious memories of the past cycles without having him in your box
