it must have felt like to Kenya when she slept her first nights at sanctuary, finally free from big city noises. Now, she gets to fall asleep to the sounds of the wind in the trees, the bugs chirping, and the bats flying overhead.

Most of the photos and videos of Kenya we share highlight her magnificent ears. She is that quintessential impressive African elephant when she fully opens her ears. But this week’s Sunday Smile shows a sillier and not quite as regal view: her face up close, with her ears all the way back.

For many captive elephants, like Kenya, moving to the sanctuary provides a new beginning and a chance to discover and rediscover who they are. A stark majority of the elephants currently in captivity were born wild. When they are captured at just a few years old and put into unnatural situations,

We’ve had an outpouring of support and shared sorrow from many of our sanctuary family. Pupy has an In Memoriam page for those of you who would like to share your thoughts and memories of her, sort of a virtual guest book.

It is with heavy hearts we share that Pupy passed away last night. 💔 Kenya stayed by her side through the night. Though we wish she had more time at the sanctuary, we are grateful for every moment she had here. Please read our full post here: https://globalelephants.org/in-loving-memory-of-pupy/

For about 40 years at Ecoparque Mendoza, Kenya could only reach for trees outside her enclosure. 🌳 Now, at sanctuary, she’s surrounded by them—free to forage, snack, and enjoy as she pleases. A life once out of reach is finally hers.

Unfortunately, it’s common for elephants in captivity

Space and the freedom to roam are critical to an elephant's physical and emotional wellbeing. Elephants have adapted to travel over wide expanses every day. Wild elephants have been documented moving as far as 62 miles (100 km) in a single day! Elephants are simply built to move...
