This week I marked a small milestone, but a milestone nonetheless, completing my Introductory Modules! In a self-paced program, there aren’t cohort schedules or shuttling from one class to another  to...

Moms shouldn't have to hold the nation together on empty. Yet we are in the middle of a government shutdown that has thrown families into chaos.

One of the first questions I get when I share I’m in midwifery school is what pathway I chose and why. Since my day job is fighting against systemic barriers, I knew I needed my training centered in community midwifery. #studentmidwife

The Many Paths to Midwifery (and the One That Found Me)
One of the first questions asked when I share that I am in midwifery school is what pathway did I chose and why. Now, for those who live, eat, breath maternal health, or health care in general, this i...

All of this!
The conversation between Klein and Coates showed me that a lot of people who screech about “infighting” on the left aren’t aware of the fact that marginalized people have been forced to learn how to regulate their emotions during conflict, and so, are better able to hear what’s actually being said.

So many hot takes about who will win/lose the shutdown, but so little discussion about what's at stake. The stakes here are whether Congress makes the law or the president can rule by diktat. Everything else is commentary.

This unfortunately feels spot on.
Preregistering:
1. The shutdown will break the record for longest shutdown (35 days).
2. Attitudes about the shutdown, and who's to blame, will be polarized along partisan lines; there will be no coherent or consistent narrative about its cause.
3. The shutdown will persist until context changes.

In news that the HHS should be shouting from the rooftops:

Availability of the RSV vaccine for pregnant people and RSV shots for infants lead to a 50% reduction in RSV-associated hospitalization of newborns during the last year! 🥳

The unfounded link of Tylenol use during pregnancy to autism is a creative way to blame mothers and further stigmatize an autism diagnosis.

This is similar to my rhythm. I absolutely block time and for the most part it’s working. It’s the time in which it directly impacts my work and someone in the office will alert me that throw me off.
Trust me, I feel this. Deeply. I don’t promise to have it figured out. But I am blocking two hours a day for what I call “this shit here”: the headlines from the majors, the 9 or so newsletters in areas I follow, a scroll through my subscribed content in Gmail, & then I clock back out.
I think I'll give up constant doomscrolling, but also the times require hypervigilance? It's an impossible balance.

I first saw the H1B nonsense on here Friday, and we needed to extricate a team member from fieldwork for immediate return. So in lieu of a society, we must scroll 😭

Workers lose $22.5 million annually in wages due to not having paid leave.
When serious personal or family health needs arise, many working people face impossible choices between their jobs and caring for their families.

Every year, 21,000 babies are stillborn in the U.S.—58 a day, more than deaths from prematurity, SIDS, car accidents, drowning, guns & flu combined.

So this feels like a slippery slope with no good outcome.
USDA quietly said Friday it will, after a century, end the Farm Labor Survey (FLS), the only wage survey of ag employers.

FLS is a critical input to setting local minimum wages for H-2A visa workers to try to avoid harm to U.S. workers' wages.
