Hello Bluesky! Chronicling here a 4-year campaign I helped lead in DC to rename Woodrow Wilson HS to Jackson-Reed HS, to stop honoring segregationist-in-chief and KKK supporter Woodrow Wilson, in favor of legendary DC Black educators Edna Jackson and Vince Reed. Gift: wapo.st/4hRcoOZ
D.C. Council votes to rename Woodrow Wilson High School to Jackson-Reed High School
The council voted Tuesday on the new moniker, which is a combination of namesakes: Vince Reed, the school’s first Black principal and Edna Jackson, the school’s first Black teacher.

An an outstanding piece by our modern day prophet of freedom Ta-Nehisi Coates, exploring the misbegotten concept of The Homeland, and comparing Renee Good and Alex Pretti to slain civil rights activist Viola Liuzzo. Well worth the read.

In the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, Trump has clarified an inconvenient fact: The culture war is an actual war.

Wow, Prof. Segall really nails it here: we can't reform the Supreme Court until we call it for what it is, not even a real "court of law." Well done, and well framed. His essay is so short and sweet, highly recommend!
“Wearing black robes and sitting in a courtroom doesn’t make lawyers act like judges-a minimal respect for prior law is what distinguishes judges from legislators but our Supreme Court has now shown that it does not place much value, if any, on prior law.” www.dorfonlaw.org/2026/01/the-...

In 1871, Congress found that the KKK was essentially a white supremacist paramilitary organization that carried out "murders, whippings, intimidation and violence" against its opponents. Sound familiar to anyone? @hcrichardson.bsky.social @jamellebouie.net @adamserwer.bsky.social

A great town hall to watch from start to finish. As impressive as Pete was, I was even more inspired by the thoughtful questions from the audience. One not clipped here was from a military and police dept. veteran who was concerned about how we achieve justice -- not vengeance -- for the 1/3
Buttigieg: Some say you can’t talk about any of the things that were wrong about America because that must mean you hate America. To me, anytime we talk about something that wrong, it’s because some of the finest moments that brought out the greatest character of this country is how we put it right.

Please: @vanhollen.senate.gov @raskin.house.gov @eleanornorton.bsky.social launch an immediate investigation into this outrageous whitewashing of DC history. Thank you for your attention to this matter!
In an outrageous Trumpian assault on the Chevy Chase community’s multi-year effort to reconcile its racially-segregated founding, the National Park Service has removed the sign at Chevy Chase Circle interpreting the complicated racist legacy of Sen Francis Newlands.

Very good news here: the proud people of DC are not putting up with Gestapo tactics by federal LEOs and out-of-control DOJ.

Brilliant historians Profs. Martha Jones and Kate Masur forcefully show how birthright citizenship was sought by FREE Black Americans for many decades before the enactment of the 14th Amendment. Gives the lie to the facile and inaccurate claim that the 14A should apply only to freed enslaved people.
I’ve told the story many times. Now @katemasur.bsky.social and I have filed it in federal court: Free Black Americans were first to recognize BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP in the US. When denied it, they fought to secure it. They show us what the 14th Amendment meant and what it meant to live without it.
Historian @marthasjones.bsky.social & @katemasur.bsky.social, a member of the Historians Council on the Constitution, filed a brief against the birthright citizenship executive order. History contradicts the administration's claim that the 14th Amendment applies only to “newly freed slaves.”
