You offer quite a bit. Allyship is also being refreshing for those who struggle with race and racism in overtly distructive ways. Choosing to be and be in community is a true exhale. Naming truths as they are and listening is also allyship. #literacies.
I often find solace in the scholarship of Black, Latinx, and Asian scholars, authors. I want my students to read their work. What do I offer in building pedagogical allyship? Perhaps my experiences and resources? Not exactly sure? #literacies

A6 I am looking forward to meeting you all during AERA 26 #literacies
A6: Uninterrupted time and a clean workspace are definitely my allies (which is why I’m not looking forward to district PD tomorrow…). My other allies include my peers in my doc program, my coworkers, and my fellow members of the #literacies SIG!

A6 Allies are willing to remind us to rest. It is a synergy where your willingness to engage requires their love and care, too. Allies will remind you to "sit this one out." The current movement for Black people to rest while our allies take up these current moments is love. #literacies
A6: I have allies who push me to see beyond my worldview shaped by my whiteness. I'm grateful to grow with mentors and friends. Good allies know learning is growth. May this space inspire new allies for us all! #literacies

A4 Say more about Dubois vs. Carver.... Do you mean Washington *Booker T.? #literacies
I’m going to be using court cases—beyond Brown v Board—to frame discussions of race and education my Foundations course. I’m going to use excerpts from racial diverse curriculum theorists in my advanced class. Pondering a Dubois versus Carver discussion too. #literaciex

A4 sure the teacher exists. Start in the inverse...have students explore stats and the questions raised that generate statics that skew toward deficit perspectives. Gloria Ladson-Billings Achievement Debt helps us see this. #literacies
I want to find a stats teacher to work with and design units where students study how stats have been used to conceal racial inequity and reveal it. Does that teacher exist? #literacies

A4: Consider interdisciplinary project where you students learn ideas and concepts within ELA and then invite your colleagues to offer ways you could reinforce math learning in YOUR lesson. They will find the connection, and BOOM- Got em. #literacies
A4: This is a great question!!! As someone who has really only teaches ELA and taught ELA & SS preservice teachers, I’m eager to hear people’s answers to this one. #literacies
July 30, 2025 at 12:42 AM
A4 The challenge is that teachers who want to work in formulas and math facts need support. What is the census? How is it used to count people? How do race and class change how the census is used? Then engage in real-life data to explore these. #literacies
A4 1/2: One of the books in the curriculum for ELA teachers at my old school was "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” which leads to excellent interdisciplinary conversations on medical ethics particularly regarding how Black communities have been exploited for "science" #literacies

A4 Being defunded is disturbing and disappointing while also revealing a great compliment. Push forward. #literacies
A4: A good example I've seen is Dr. Betsy Davis's ASSETS project at the University of Michigan. It aims to enhance equity in elementary science by building racial #literacies and justice practices in teachers through four different approaches. Sadly, despite its impact, the NSF recently defunded it.

A4 I had a math teacher develop all of her word problems based on race history facts. "How many years after the signing of the Emancipation Pro were Black people able to vote?" #literacies
3rd grade teacher
A4 2/2: Math teachers can have students use racial literacy to critically examine national or local statistics. (also, another excellent book for bio/social studies/ELA interdisciplinary racial #literacies work!)

A3: We all participate in race framework, as ally's, objects, and subjects. Our literacies and awarenesses of this is how our actions are able to serve the positions we hold or are endowed. #literacies.
A3 2/2: However, this analysis must also lead into actions based on our readings. I actually published an article examining my use of racial literacies as a teacher to interrupt inequalities but also how I reinforced it as well tinyurl.com/MisraRac...

A3 ...And it is a narrative of our republic that illuminates how our very government and institutional structure rely upon race in order to advance itself. #literacies
A3 1/2: I understand racial #literacies as an analytic process a la Lani Guinier’s (2004) description of it as “the capacity to decipher the durable racial grammar that structures racialized hierarchies and frames the narrative of our republic” (p. 100).
July 30, 2025 at 12:30 AM
A3: As such, racial literacies help us to see when this "centering whiteness" work is happening. Without a racial analytic lens, we would not even know it is happening. #literacies
A3: Scholars like Dr. Yolanda Sealey-Ruiz, Dr. April Baker-Bell, and Dr. Ebony Elizabeth Thomas have been pivotal in shaping my understanding of racial literacies. Their work is crucial now as the government demands centering whiteness in our pedagogies and curriculum. #literacies
July 30, 2025 at 12:28 AM
A3: Indeed. Racial literacies is an intentional process where seeking more perspectives and views serve us to grow our own thinking. Thank you for that. #literacies
A3: I think racial #literacies embodies the inclusion of diversity & equity in the texts that we encounter. As a HS, this means that I try to reflect the identities of my majority Hispanic population in our readings and also the identities of people we don’t typically encounter in our school texts.

A1: Thank you, Kyle. Building community while interrogating hard topics can occur. Two things can be true at the same time. #literacies
A1: I'm here to learn from others and build community through conversation. #literacy

Yes, one does not cancel the other. One does hold more weight in how it shaped the law and laws to follow for others. #oooof that is a hard part of the analytic truth of racial frameworks. #literacies
When I talk to my students about intersectionality, I offer that no identity ‘cancels’ the others out, the privilege and marginalization interact. Holding space for race—a visible identity for many—is essential to recognize the visceral existence of moving through the world. #literacies
July 30, 2025 at 12:24 AM
A1 Engaging and allyship are important. Consider the multiplicity of also inviting the opportunity to "unplug." My dear colleague invited me to a "sound bath," and the idea that she needed it and extended it to me was amazing.
A1: With race, racism, and wellbeing, I try to focus on what I can influence: Uplifting cultural events in my community, reading culturally relevant texts in my classroom, and also just being a good ally in general to people of color, which can include many many things! #literacies

Q2: What is your understanding for why discussions of race should be had in isolation to other areas of marginalization or oppression? Not in resistance to intersectionalities but holding focused space for people and communities oppressed by racism? #literacies
