January is named for the god Janus, the god of thresholds.

As an old year ends and a new year starts, a chance to set an intention for the year you want to have.

Not a resolution.

Resolutions come from shame – from "I'm not enough as I am." Promises made in haste fade before the snow thaws.

New Year is traditionally the time for resolutions, making changes to your life.

But promises are easy. Committed action is harder.

Every journey is a series of steps – but those steps need both a starting point and a destination in mind.

As the year draws to a close, a question comes into view: what did you learn about yourself from what happened?

Lessons don't have to be big or profound. Sometimes they're small and obvious. The value is in noticing them – in bringing them to consciousness.

As the year comes to a close and we've had a rest, it gives us a chance to look back on what we have Done

We're wired to focus on what went wrong. It's called negativity bias – our brains evolved to scan for threats, for problems, for what needs fixing.

Maybe you set a boundary. Maybe you showed up for yourself in a way you hadn't before. Maybe you kept going when it would have been easier to stop.

When you acknowledge those wins – even the small ones – there's a warm glow. Like sitting by embers from a fire. That warmth is recognition.

The turning of the year gives us a chance to pause and look back – not with judgment, but with curiosity

Reflection isn’t wasted time. It’s not navel-gazing or dwelling on the past

It’s what gardeners do in winter – turning the soil, examining what’s there, preparing the ground for what comes next

When you review the year that’s been, you’re learning from the patterns that make up who you are. You’re identifying what worked, what didn’t, and what you might want to do differently.

What moments felt most like you?

What habits served you well?

What obstacles did you encounter?

Boxing Day

All the rushing is over

Presents have been wrapped and unwrapped, dinner cooked and eaten

All the big set pieces are done

Just like a snowglobe, all the snow has settled

Christmas can be a trying time – endless adverts spreading an image of joy that doesn't necessarily fit with the reality of life.
The lists. The logistics. The rush. However you got here – stressed, prepared, winging it, barely holding on – you made it.

In the rush to get to Christmas, it's easy to forget to do something as simple as taking a pause to breathe.

Watch how softly the snowflakes land, gradually building up a blanket of silence on the rushing world.

Three days until Christmas. The rush is real.

Here's something I often do with clients when they're in the middle of stress: visualise the moment after.
Not during the rush—after it's settled.

Stories are very powerful, esp. the stories that we tell ourselves that get converted to strong beliefs over time.

The shortest day of the year is here. For those who struggle with short days and long dark evenings—this is the turning point. Spring is on the way.

The winter solstice: the day the light begins its slow return.

Sometimes the past doesn't stay where we left it.

Certain memories return unbidden—not as gentle nostalgia but as cold companions that stop us mid-step.

These aren't simply recollections; they're embodied experiences that still carry charge.

We live in a culture that prizes decisiveness, that measures worth by speed and productivity.

But nature reveals a different wisdom: flowers don't all bloom at once.

There's an intelligence in taking time – allowing yourself to experience each option before committing.

Your breathing changes before your thoughts catch up.
The nervous system speaks in sensations first, words second. Listen there.

Sometimes the biggest battles are with your smallest fears

We dream of transformation – a complete overhaul, the moment everything changes. We set ourselves enormous goals and then wonder why we can't seem to follow through. The mountain ahead looks insurmountable, so we never take the first step.

The mask you wear to belong – it works until it becomes so familiar you forget you're wearing it.
Until it starts feeling suffocating.

Creativity as medicine: every time you make something, you remind your nervous system that you have agency in shaping your world.

CBT shows you that between what happens and how you feel about it, there's always a thought.
Change the thought, shift the experience.

The stories about why you can't – they're so convincing because they've had decades of rehearsal.
Time to learn some new lines.
