I want to expand on this point, because I agree. I’m pretty grateful that I’ve met folk well into their 70s (and even their 80s) that stand pretty firmly against the notion of “Old Guard™️”
And yet, folks still read John Weal’s book. Hell it got to me before those older Leatherfolk did.

There are plenty of people who lived in the time of the "Old Guard" who find things like "covering ceremonies" ridiculous. These things mean what you want them to mean, in your circle. There is a lot of mythology.

I also think this will discourage younger people from even trying to compete on that level at all, after all they only have one chance now and after that they’ve “joined the brotherhood” and can never compete again
