Sixty Years Ago today (Feb. 4 1966). The Who begin a three-day preview of their headlining theatre tour of the U.K. #TheWho
Although the first night at Finsbury Park Astoria was plagued by gremlins -- like mikes not working and curtains not closing -- the Who and a thunderous reception, almost loud enough to drown the noise they made! They opened on a darkened stage with "Heatwave" and although many of their subsequent numbers were indistinguishable through the barrage of noise, I managed to identify "Runaround Sue," "Dancing in The Street," "Up Tight," "Daddy Rolling Stone" and "It's Not True," before they closed with "My Generation." The Who's first bill-topping concert appearance was quite impressive. Lead singer Roger Daltrey (dressed in patriotic red, white, and blue shirt), moved well, but guitarists John Browne and Pete Townshend could rehearse a few more stage actions. The Merseys (the two remaining members of the Merseybeats), preceding the Who, brought the biggest surprise of the show. Tony Crane and Billy Kinsley are talented. They were backed by their own group, which included two drummers, and the result was an exciting and professional act! Tony and Billy had well-rehearsed actions which whipped a lot of enthusiasm into the audience. They look good, sound good and could become very, very big this year! The overall result was a show with a lot of talent and originality. But a female on the bill would have been welcomed and there should have been a lot less time between acts. And couldn't the Who play just a little quieter?

Disc Weekly: Faces of Keith Moon – by the woman who knows him best…His MUM! Keith doesn't smoke, drinks only in moderation and doesn't bother much about girls, he's absolutely dedicated to drumming, and if ever the group scene packed up, he would still stick to music—his main love. He’s always been keen on music. Right from the age of three. He would sit for hours beside an old portable gramophone and play old 78 records of stars like Nat King Cole and Scots leader Jimmy Shand. But when he joined the Sea Cadets, he took up the bugle, and became very good, too. He would practise at home, then later traded in that bugle for a set of drums. They cost him £25, and his dad helped him make up the money to buy them. Then it was more practice in the sitting-room on Sunday afternoons. I often worried about the neighbours. Keith listened to all the pop records—the Beach Boys were his favourites. He has all their records. Drumming was in his blood. So, I was not surprised when he took his job with the Who. That put paid to any plans we had for him to go into the TV business on the technical side. We never dreamed at that time he would become a TV star on the other side of the cameras! At first, he played locally with the Who. But I must admit when he said he would have to go out of town, I was worried stiff. After all, he was only 16, so this was a mother’s natural reactions. I spent a few sleepless nights the first time he was away. But he is a thoughtful boy and always phones me from the most out-of-the-way places. I’VE HEARD IT SAID THAT KEITH SWEARS WHILE HE'S DRUMMING. Really, he’s just muttering to the music. Certainly, I’ve never heard him swear at home. Anyway, there are two other girls in the house! His sisters, Linda (16) and Lesley (7). I’m a fan, too. I watch all his shows on TV and tell the neighbours when he is going to be on. Normally, I don’t smoke, but I always light up a cigarette when I'm watching Keith. GIRLS? Keith has never bothered much about them.
