Tuesday also disappointingly saw the last ever episode of Short Cuts on Radio 4. I’ll miss it. It was a wonderful format for new radio producers and unusual radio ideas. And for presenter Josie Long’s hushed, almost ASMR voice overs. The programme was often a little oasis of quiet exploration on the radio. Given that we’re about to enter a four-year period of noisy, cruel, performative stupidity, we could do with more of that. And Tuesday’s programme also reminded us that even before words and music radio is sound, as evidenced in The Shortwave Collective’s contribution Perhaps at Midnight, When All Boundaries Are Lost. “My antenna picks up very low frequency radio waves,” one of the collective told us over the snap, crackle and pop. “I’m not listening to commercial broadcasts or human transmissions. I’m listening to the Earth’s natural static.” It would be a shame if Radio 4 gave up on this sense of adventure.

I really hope Radio 4 rethink the cancellation of Short Cuts - when I mentioned it on stage last night there were gasps from the audience - Josie Long is a rare voice in this world
