Beach End - Left Side
Not had this on my turntable for literally 30+ years, so #nowplaying is Japan with ‘Tin Drum’. Actually forgot how incredibly good it is. Certainly won’t leave it long til my next listen.

Haven’t posted one of these for a while so today’s retro Dons press cutting shows Joey Harper trying on one of his Scotland caps for size.

Thursday night is loud music night as I take advantage of the current Mrs Skene being at work, so #nomplaying is this great collection of cover versions from the inimitable David Bowie - ‘Pin Ups’. Always loved this album and iconic sleeve.

Just had a reminder from Concert Archives that 4 years ago tonight I was at the Music Hall in Aberdeen to see The Stranglers for the umpteenth time. Always a pleasure never a chore.

Another album that, strangely, I never owned back in the 70s. Got myself a nice pink vinyl copy a wee while ago so #nowplaying is the eponymous debut album by ‘The Clash’. Very groundbreaking and extremely powerful.

Got some ‘Assai’ vouchers from my son & his family for Christmas and finally bagged myself a copy of this, so #nowplaying is ‘Power, Corruption & Lies’ by New Order. Another off of my ‘want’ list, although it gets longer rather than shorter.

The football on mute again on the TV tonight so I thought I’d give this classic a blast, so #nowplaying is ‘Separates’ by Nine Nine Nine. Brilliant album. Came with a free 12” ‘Waiting/Action’ which I will have to fire up again soon.

I’ve got the football on mute on the TV and I’ve not played this for ages so #nowplaying is ‘New Gold Dream’ by the mighty Simple Minds. It was my favourite of theirs when it came out, but with hindsight I feel they peaked before this.

It’s Thursday night and I’ve got ‘an empty’, as the kids say, so #nowplaying very loud is this wonderful piece of work from the greatly missed George Michael - ‘Faith’. Brilliant.

A freezing cold dreich evening here, so I’m not going to leave the house. On a positive note that means i can get some music on. So #nowplaying is ‘Low Life’ by New Order. Not played it for a while and actually forgot how good it is.

Still knee deep in snow up here so unable to get out for a walk. Not heard this in absolutely ages so #nowplaying is The Stranglers with ‘Live (X Cert)’……”Did someone say wanker ?”

Snowed in on a Saturday night, and we watched a movie this afternoon, so time for some music - #nowplaying is ‘Little Creatures’ by the marvellous Talking Heads. Did they make a poor album ? Not in my view.

Somewhat inspired by an earlier post by @marzid.bsky.social I thought I’d fire up some Simple Minds tonight, but not one of the obvious ones. So #nowplaying is Real to Real Cacophony. A good few pointers to what they were about to become.

Well now that the grandkids have gone home and the house gets back to normal it’s time for some music. So #nowplaying is the supremely talented Grace Jones with ‘Island Life’. A fantastic compilation stacked with classic tunes.

Just had a reminder from Concert Archives that 43 years ago today I was at Aberdeen Capitol to see Simple Minds. I would like to say they were brilliantly supported by China Crisis, but we stayed in the bar too long and missed them. Numpties.

Another childhood pic of my late brother and some of the ‘Young Ash Team’, this time featuring an 8 or 9 year old me on the right with the striped t-shirt and obviously my favourite stick.
Again from 1971/72ish.

Here’s an evocative old pic from my childhood. This is my late brother, on the right, with some of his ‘Young Ash Team’ pals beside the ‘scaffie’s sheddie’ in Ashgrove, Aberdeen. This was taken about 1971/72.

Well, last night I finally got to scratch an itch I’ve had since 1979 by going to see the wonderful Madness at Aberdeen P&J Arena. An added bonus was that they were supported by Squeeze. A fantastic night out with my daughter.
