Sketch of a busy noodle shop on the street. Commonly found in residential city neighbourhoods, a drinks box on the right, and the main kitchen is a wagon on the left with instant packet noodles, a fryer and two propane tanks. Two large umbrellas provide shade and protection from rain. Perch is standing behind the drinks bar as guest are served their meals inside the building. A corner shop in the deli section of Queen Victoria Market, Melbourne. They serve hot foods there. It seems to have been closed for cleaning as a dragon adorned with deli olives and cheese pokes their head out to inform customers. A Japanese Bakery in a not so hidden alleyway in Melbourne. It's pretty easy to spot since there will normally be a line of people reaching all the way to the street. They produce a wide variety of pastries displayed in cuboid display cases right by the entrance.

Honestly, the best way to make an artist’s day is by being very specific about what you like about a piece. Geek out a lil. Gush over how they use line, color, texture. Every mark is layed down by the artist, so if you can connect with those little moments, it helps the artist feel seen.

Progress pictures of the painting below. I wanted to try painting something and using layers and clipping masks. The background was done mostly as one layer, the rock, chest and bubbles were a layer each.

After placing the flat colours beneath the linework, the next step is to colour over the lines. This is where most of the time goes usually. Usually it's to cover lines. Background of the painting. It started out supposed to be a forest clearing, like a school yard cut into a forest. It then became an underwater scene as I added more reds and suggested larger kelp-like shape. Then came the sky blue and made it official.

Xiao Long Bao anyone? Rich pork and ginger broth steamed in a thinly rolled bun. Watch out as it is served scalding hot on the inside. Best dipped in a rice vinegar with crisp ginger. A market scene: this was taken from a google street view of a corner in Phnom Penh's Toul Tom Pong market. It's dingy, wet, very loud, but bustling with grocery and general goods, and amenities. A corner shop sells meat sandwiches, fresh smoothies and Char Kway fries in the background. A horse eats: while in a group chat Oguri Cap was mentioned. His reputation as a big eater was pretty funny. Now retired at a farm, I'd imagine he'd be eating quite well, in this case an entire half watermelon to eat. Also on this page are fluffy Tempura dipped in saucd, and Samyangtang, a ginseng chicken soup perfect for winters.

@senshark.bsky.social and Perch having a picnic in the water. If there were a place where kelp and sea grass grows in brackish water (both fresh and sea water), these two would be meeting there regularly.

A sketch based on the public transport seen throughout Melbourne, Australia. An Alstrom Xtrapolis train zips through a rail tunnel, emerging from a brick archway. "So.... you come here often? The water is nice, warm and herbal. Great for skin, come stay a while. Don't mind the carrots and vegetables. They really bring out those pores." A "Steamboat" or hotpot setup with on a picnic fabric with plates of bokchoy, mushrooms and sliced meat. A deer gazes on waiting for the fish to be ready to cook. Snow leopard study required for a commission. This one focused on how the eyes, nose, ears and chin relate to each other. There's a lot of fluff as these animals live in really cold environments. A sketch of an airport and how the gates would be visible against the blackness of space. It's weird that planes would take on in space as there would be no atmosphere. Passengers to walk the tarmac on the moon would wear a flexible bubble helmet, astronaut suits, or just normal suits. Fawn and Puffball also found themselves floating in zero gravity, unsure of what to do to get to their flight. Perch finds a ដូង /doung/ (Coconut). Perch drinks the coconut water and finds that they really like it. It's not too sweet, slight salty, and very refreshing. Perch finds out alcohol can be made out of coconuts to much surprise.

Murtabak - Indonesia's sweet, savoury, filling desert gift to the world - this one was a peanut and Nutella filling. Followed by the two states of deer: innocent and goober, oblivious to the car accident they've caused; and cryptid cervid, fully aware of the injuries they've cause by tipping the Kinetic Bus. Water - forever refreshing. This deer finds nothing better than a cold one, or a warm one. Drinking from a cup of water while in a high rise looking to the traffic below. Fawn and Puffball! These are two friends in a writing project I have. We don't quite know what Puffball is, but they are really puffy, which hides their legs and make them look like they float just slightly off the ground. Fawn is a bit lost, but it's a loyal friend. When a deer doesn't have their horns, they can look very much like a kangaroo. Or maybe that's just my current skill...

More drawings of deer - Chess Deer.
Dii. He's actually based on someone I know growing up playing Khmer Chess with a lot. Mixed between a mountain goat and a deer. More sketches on chess and deer. The pose in this one is very much like the "Ace Trainers" you would find at the end of a Pokemon game. This character is based on a gazelle. Reuben on the other hand might be your rival, modelled after a bull and shares their temperament.

A friend of mine suggested 3D printing furry chess pieces like the ones from Harry Potter: a kobold or fawn pawn, a quadruped hyena, a horse horse, a stork bishop holding a mace (a frog would have resembled a bishop more), a queen fox wielding a rapier, and a king dog with sword and shield. Scribbles of what a "Dog King" would dress like. Bangkeaw dog wearing a headpiece shaped after the King and Queen pieces from hit boardgame Ouk Chatrang (Khmer Chess).

I'm posting some sketches down this thread. These are the highlights over the past year. It's pretty common for sketches to be on a wide variety of subjects:

Over spring I did a bit of swimming in the morning. There were these seagulls messing around the kiddy pool.
The wading poll was beneath a triangular canopy. Three handrails sweep along an arc into the shallow water and seemed like metals straws drinking from the water. A low hedge and chain fence formed the perimeter of the swimming centre. A group of seagulls gather around the water, chasing and vocalising as they do: "Bob, you gotta stop drinking the pool water." Close up of the seagulls. One of them hides their face in sheer embarrassment at its colleague's perseverance drinking pool water. "I swear to clucking Christ Bob!" The honcho of the seagull group wanders off, grumbling to itself the lost cause the Don has left with him: "I can't believe the Don left me with that bird brain."
