One frustrating thing about modern media coverage of youth care is that it typically dates the start of trans care being offered to youth to the first use of puberty blockers for trans youth by the Dutch.
This false narrative comes from people who want to frame trans kids as a new phenomenon.

Under that model, what the OP described was more or less right - you might start hormone therapy as an adolescent, but for surgery you waited until 18.
This model isn't new, and long predates the use of puberty blockers, as chronicled by Jules Gill-Peterson in Histories of the Transgender Child.

Recent commentary about a Fox News poll regarding "transgender issues" seems to miss crucial context. The poll didn't assess support for trans people, it assessed which party Americans prefer to "handle" trans people.
Americans favor Dems’ handling of trans issues. That doesn’t mean Americans support trans people.
It merely means that given a binary choice between Democrats and Republicans, most choose the Democrats to ‘handle’ us.
