My latest for @nytimes.com! For 40 years, paleontologists have grappled over whether a small tyrannosaur — named Nanotyrannus — was its own animal, or simply a teenage T.rex. The debate has been ... contentious. Which is why it's so fun to finally be able to say this:

Folks? Nanotyrannus is real.

Happy to have been interviewed for part of @lisasgardiner.bsky.social's @sciencenews.bsky.social article about my favorite bioeroding & carbonate-sand-pooping fishes, parrotfishes; also includes keen insights from Drs. Katie Cramer & Ana Molina Hernández. www.snexplores.org/article/parr... 🧪🐠🪸🏖️
Parrotfish shape the future of coral reefs, one bite at a time
Could these colorful fish aid struggling coral? Yes, but not always. Parrotfish play a complex role in reefs — and sometimes may cause harm.

Repeat after me: these budget cuts are theft. Our elected officials are stealing from us. They work for us, and they are breaking what we hired them to protect.
BREAKING from @science.org: The Trump admin is seeking to kill nearly all climate research at NOAA, its climate science agency.

Its near-final budget proposal would end all NOAA research labs, academic institutes, and regional climate centers. And it wants to fully end the NOAA Research division.

Trump team cites wolf ‘de-extinction’ as reason to cut endangered species list
The interior secretary hailed a biotech company’s claim to have brought back the dire wolf, while the administration and GOP push to roll back species protections.

This post by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum demonstrates clear defiance of the Endangered Species Act. He states that regulation is not the solution.

Innovation is needed- in concert with regulation- to find new paths to recovery while protecting what still exists.

“No vineagar for me, I just use snot!”

Comical and informative sketch of a Man-o-War fish (Nomeus gronovii).

Living amongst and even feeding on the tentacles of its namesake Siphonophore, this Driftfish (Nomeidae) uses a dense layer of mucus to counteractpotential stings. #fishart #sciart

My support and deepest sorrow to all in DOI and beyond who have had their careers unlawfully ripped away from them. This disgusting flaunting and abuse of power is a direct threat to our nation, it's people, and the wild country we have left.

I think that considering current situation with science in the US and upcoming elections in Germany, we should do one thing we almost never do - open discussion on how politics impacts science both within scientific community (e.g. in universities, research institutions, etc) & with general public.
