The Manitou city jail was constructed in 1922 and was used until 1935. Now the town of Manitou isn't very big, so I guess they didn't need a big jail. Manitou was established in 1902 and platted in 1904. At one time about 500 people lived there but the population has fallen for years.

There are still a few historic buildings in Piedmont. The school and gym were torn down many years ago, replaced with new buildings.

Piedmont was founded in 1903 by Dr EH Long. The next year saw an auction of residential and business lots in the new town. The St. Louis, El Reno and Western Railway also came through town connecting Guthrie to El Reno.

Bonus- If you know where to look north of Route 66 going into Clinton, you will see a picnic table from a small roadside park that used to sit alongside the historic highway.

The Glancy Motor Hotel stood in Clinton along Route 66 for many years. Welcoming travelers since it opened in 1950 until closing in the 2000's. Pop Hicks Restaurant right next door burned in 1999 and was never rebuilt. The Glancy was condemned in 2019 and torn down in 2023.

I mentioned that Route 66 runs right through Clinton. The abandoned motel in the first pic is on the east side of town, right after you get off I-40. The second abandoned motel is on the older alignment that goes past McLain Rogers Park.

Legendary Route 66 runs through Clinton. McLain Rogers Park has been a place to stop and get some air along the historic route. The city of Clinton bought the property in 1934 with the plan to develop a city park for the residents.

Clinton is home to about ten thousand people. The middle school was originally the high school. Built in 1935, it is still serving the kids in the area. The Redland Theater started as the Rialto Theater in 1922 with the name change coming in the 1950's.

Clinton was founded in 1903. The land was owned by four Cheyenne and they had to get special permission from the US Congress to sell to developers. There was a lawsuit from the town of Arapaho to stop the development of a new town. But Judge Clinton Irwin ruled against Arapaho.

I absolutely love hyacinths. They smell so beautiful and just evoke the spirit of spring. I have often cut mine to bring in the house, for color and scent.

Route 66 runs right through the middle of Erick. Lots of abandoned motels and service stations still stand.
March 20, 2025 at 12:55 AM
The West Winds Motel in Erick was built around 1948 to serve weary travelers on Route 66. The sign with a bucking bronco was legendary on the historic highway. Closed in the 1990's and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

Erick is the birthplace of Sheb Wooley, country singer and actor. His big hit, "The Purple People Eater", is honored in a small spot downtown Erick. His cousin by marriage is Roger Miller. He was sent to Erick at a young age and grew up in the small town.

Erick was founded in 1901. The original name was Dennis, given to the post office in 1900 but changed the following year.

This beautiful building was built in 1907. It is not only the crown jewel of Erick but a landmark on Route 66. The First National Bank of Erick started in 1902 as the Citizens Bank of Erick. The name changed in 1905 and this building constructed 2 years later.

Minco's post office was established on June 20, 1890 with the townsite itself plotted on July 4, 1890. It has grown slowly over the years, keeping the big city just within reach but not taking it over.

Yesterday I talked about the Minco Armory, well behind it is a small park. The whole block, including where the armory sits, was once the home of El Meta Bond College. It was founded by Mrs. Meta Chestnutt Sager in 1889 and served students until 1919.

The Pocasset Gym was built by the WPA in 1940. It had modern equipment, with hot and cold showers in the 2 large dressing rooms. It was used for many years and looks to have been abandoned in the 1980's.
