I came in with absolutely no expectations for Star Trek’s Starfleet Academy but each and every episode they surpass them entirely.

Particularly, episode 5’s Series Acclimation MIL was such an endearing, insightful, and above all loving tribute to DS9. I’ve been in tears since.

I don’t post much, but I need to get this one on the public record. I got groped at my workplace, Ulta Cosmetics, and it exposed a nasty culture of negligence.

It’s made me realize why people who have experienced what I have never come forward. But, I realized that the only entities who benefit from my public silence are the person who sexually harassed me and Ulta, the company where it happened. On November 9th, I was groped by a coworker. She had no business touching me where she did, nor lingering there an uncomfortable amount of time. This occurred on camera and in front of witnesses. I gave a statement to one manager for informational purposes that next day. I then amended it into a formal grievance the day after that. I gave my amended statement to my direct report manager, not making the connection that she’s related to the person who groped me. Image of text. Text reads, The issue, according to Ulta, is “resolved.” The (now former) coworker has been fired, a fact I learned only after repeated inquiries to management, HR, and the district manager. But there’s more to it than that. The manager was directly involved in taking the statement from me—and her relative. This constituted a clear conflict of interest, one which went unreported by the district manager’s own admission. A conflict of interest, interestingly, explains why the process took nearly a month to unfold, why the accused was made aware of the accusation immediately, why she was permitted to work with me again and repeatedly request to talk with me off the record, and why no other witness statements were immediately taken. It also explains the disrespect that manager, my direct report, has shown to me and others in the interim. A conflict of interest doesn’t explain why I’ve been condescended to by my Human Resources representative, all the “miscommunication” from management of all levels, and why I’ve had to claw the miniscule scraps of information that I have been able to only through vociferous, repetitive, and sometimes confrontational self-advocacy. On this point, for those of us who are mandatory reporters, your obligation to report has been satisfied. The bitter and cruel irony is that I had to fundamentally mandatory report myself. My institution, one which pays me a wage so low I need this second job to keep my rent paid, immediately closed the book on it. Just today, too, I had to file a Worker’s Comp claim and bare my soul once again. Finally, it doesn’t explain nor resolve Ulta’s decision to have her still be my direct report manager. The issue, its reps feel, has been satisfactorily resolved. Obviously, I don’t share the sentiment. A stern talking to doesn’t undo the culture of negligence that led to me getting groped in the first place. So, I guess I’m baring my soul once again. One final time. But I’m doing so this last time to get it on the record, to get how utterly infuriated I am about this whole thing on the record, and emphasize once again that the only people who benefit from your silence are the perpetrators of wrongdoing against you.
