Travelling to Brisbane and back to Sydney, mostly by rail, using the 14 day Discovery Pass. Destinations include Gosford, Newcastle, Taree, Kempsey, Coffs Harbour, Grafton, Casino, Lismore, Lennox Head, Byron Bay, Gold Coast, and Brisbane. I’ll post observations in this thread 🧵
Further details of TfNSW’s future plans for Sydney’s rail network have leaked (link in replies). These don’t have government approval yet, let alone funding. But they give a good indication of the next “cab off the rank”.

Apparently you don't need any formal education at all to be a traffic engineer in the state of Missouri.

It appears that 50c fares in SE QLD have probably had a minimal impact on PT ridership (at least, this is my interpretation of Daniel's blog post).

Yes, patronage increased after the fare cut, but the increase doesn't appear to be dramatically above the existing trends.
Blog: #Brisbane 50 cent fares - revenue is down, obviously, and probably doesn't cover the cost of fare collection. But patronage has recovered and exceeded pre-COVID levels. What's not clear is whether it'll keep rising.

Thank you Antony Green. Australian democracy is better off because of you and all of your work over the decades. You are a national treasure.

Huge retirement announcement from a national treasure. I once heard Antony Green described as Australia's David Attenborough and I think that is a fitting comparison. I know few public figures as universally loved or respected as him. antonygreen.com.au/why-ive-deci...

We'd get way more bang-for-buck from a Federal "make regional rail not terrible" Authority. If Sydney-Canberra was 2 hours it'd be a winner. That's speeds our existing trains could do if the tracks allowed it.

Day 5 (Tuesday 31 Dec): Brisbane and Gold Coast

Yesterday was a transit day, Bris to GC. There was a signal failure at Fortitude Valley, leading to 30 minute delays as there was only one track pair in operation. Interestingly, the station PIDs don’t have real time data, but apps do.

My thoughts on today's Parramatta Light Rail. What it does well plus any missed opportunities. Overall, it's a good addition to PT into and around Parramatta & has the potential to form the core of a larger future network of light rail in the region transportsydney.wordpress.com/2024/12/20/p...

Can we please permanently increase weekend frequencies on Sydney Metro from every 10 minutes to every 7 minutes? This was today (Sunday afternoon) between Barangaroo and Victoria Cross. Standing room only. #FrequencyIsFreedom
