Just finished it! The MC is a real self aware POS who lies to everyone including himself. The book take the piss out of America's attitudes as saviors to Vietnam set to a love triangle over a woman named Phuong who is shown the same level of respect as her country by the men invading it.
Maybe try 'The Quiet American' by Graham Greene? I haven't
read it myself but maybe it's what you're looking for?
