Three weeks of vacation. The plan:
– Netflix and chill

Reality:
– Plowing snow
– Watching a three-hour Dave Cutler / Dave Plummer vlog: www.youtube.com/watch?v=xi1L...
– Acquiring a completely useless skill: printing “Hello, World” in MACRO-11 on a PDP-11/70 running RSX-11

I independently reached the same conclusion, indicating that it is indeed true.

What made it even more awesome was *how* I found out. Not via Bluesky, but through the “latest CSDB releases” welcome message when I logged into ParticlesBBS on my #C64 - The earliest form of online social media. particles.org 😎

Absolute masterpiece! Beyond happy I’ve got two SIDs in my #C64. Sorry, neighbours. Today it’s gonna be chiptune Bohemian Rhapsody on repeat. And possibly tomorrow too.
8-Bit ROCK OPERA finally finished ✨

The response to the previews was absolutely amazing and motivated me so much.
I can’t wait for you to experience the full version now – from start to finish. 💾🕹️🎶

Sure, you can play games on the C64. Or you can use the 8bit home computer from 1982 as a VT100 terminal for a high performance 16 bit micro computer from 1975 - to play Super Star Trek on a PDP-11/70. "LAST UPDATE 31-MAR 77"😄

To wrap up this short series of posts, here’s another Japanese tradition: クリスマスケーキ (“kurisumasu kēki,” literally “Christmas cake”). Strawberries and cream symbolize the red and white colors of Christmas. I only got a strawberry cheesecake here, it will have to do instead 😅

I can’t help it, but this feels a lot like living in the Demolition Man future where Pizza Hut is revealed to be the sole survivor of the Franchise Wars and somehow becomes synonymous with fine dining 😂

This somewhat unusual Christmas tradition began in #Japan, where people start reserving tables as early as November to enjoy fried chicken on Christmas Day. at #KFC, of all places. What started as a marketing campaign by a single store in the 1970s has since grown into a nationwide custom. 🍗🎄

"Weihnachtsgans mit Klößen und Grünkohl" is another traditional German Christmas dish.

The Weihnachtsgans (lit. "Christmas Goose") is stuffed and typically served with boiled potato dumplings (Klöße), made from mashed potatoes, eggs, flour, and nutmeg, and accompanied by kale or red cabbage.

"Bockwurst mit Kartoffelsalat" is a traditional dish eaten on Christmas Eve which is on December 24th here in Germany. The 25th and 26th are the days when we enjoy more elaborate meals than sausages and potato salad and take the time to slow down - or argue with our families. Whatever you prefer 😅

True story! KFC being a nationwide Xmas tradition in Japan dates back to clever marketing in the 70s by a single store. Nowadays you need to file your order for December 25th weeks ahead online. The Xmas party bucket also includes biscuits, meat gratin and a strawberry vanilla mousse.

We’re doing a workshop at work where we can choose any topic or technology, ideally something totally unrelated to our day to day work. We get two days to explore and freely tinker with things we’d probably never get to try otherwise.
I present to you my first baby steps in Blender 😄 #blender #3d

It’s strange to think that only a day ago I was 9,300 kilometers away. This picture is from my final stroll through Akihabara with it's neon lights, buzzing arcades and anime shops. Goodbye, Japan. Thank you for the memories and see you next time - 思い出をありがとう。またこんど!👋 #japan #akihabara #tokyo

Our parting meal: Yakiniku. A Japanese style of grilling bite-sized meats and vegetables over a tabletop charcoal or gas grill.

I opted for a more affordable keepsake to remember this trip: the #Japan exclusive, #Ukiyo-e inspired #Seiko SKX GMT. It’s a perfect little showcase of Japanese craftsmanship with a hint of traditional art. With that, today’s watch-shopping tour comes to a close.

Also Japan: queue-ception at what looks like an actual authorized dealership - in a mall of all places! An entire line of people waiting… to be placed on a waiting list… for something they still won’t be able to buy. 🙃

Bic Camera in Tokyo has a #Rolex section. Because nothing says ‘luxury Swiss timepiece’ like buying one next to discounted rice cookers. Also Rolex and Tudor next to Gucci? That’s an express elevator from Swiss watchmaking royalty straight down to ‘designer-logo-on-a-quartz-movement’ territory. 🤣
