New #AsiaNow post: JAS Editor Joseph Alter discusses how increased use of AI has led to more submissions to the journal (almost 800 in 2025!) and also prompted him to think about the relationship between an author and their work.

The Journal of Asian Studies and AI - Association for Asian Studies
By Joseph S. Alter It is difficult to exaggerate the impact of AI on academia in general and on scholarly publishing in particular. Tools such as ChatGPT and Claude have made it possible for anyone to turn free-floating information into what looks like knowledge using a combination of real and artificial intelligence. There are many […]

Twelve books for three pounds. Is that a bargain? It certainly is a bargain! From an @amnestyuk.bsky.social charity shop near me...

This past weekend's new #reads came from the Oxfam bookshop in Bath - Lynn Truss, plus Garrison Keillor and A.N. Wilson for £1 (megabargains!) - with hundreds of years of the history of Greece from the Dorothy House bookshop.

There's an exhibition of 2024 Japan design award winners at the PMQ centre for the next few days.

These are cool. Woodcut-style designs for the 150 anniversary of Japan Railways.

It's nice to see Grevillia robusta flowers from a sensible height, rather than from the ground looking up!

This tree's by the walkway at the Tuen Mun end of Long Ping station on the Tuen Mun MTR line.

It's International Palm Day, and look what I found by the seaside, right at the tip of Ap Lei Pai island earlier - and only there, and not seen on Mt Johnson en route either.

It's Calamus tetradactylus, hoorah!

It was Qatar vs HK in the #T20I wooden spoon match earlier today. Here's one of my very few pics that worked reasonably well - the ball hits Mujeeb's stumps (is it he, an I sure?), the bails just jumping up to fly awayyyyy!

Look at all this - I found and filled these three bags with plastic waste at the little airport viewing area above the meteorology station at Sha Lo Wan two days ago, and popped them in the bin that is by the path leading up there. Disappointing.

A couple of days ago, before the clouds and rain set in, I caught this BAA-logo small #jet marked with 亚联公务机 landing on 25L #HKIA.

Could it be an ASEAN aircraft (亚联...?)
BAA was/is an airport operator. Same BAA?

Quite a mystery...

I've done 6 jobapps today, feeling😴

One of the systems was so bad that you simply couldn't attach the documents they asked for, and even had two sections to cover work and experience, both of which overlapped career information completely and I can't grasp why. Why can't HR sort their systems, eh?

At Shek O on the northern edge of the Po Toi granite pluton, cheeky young whippersnappers (< 140m yrs old) share their form and lovely colours.

Such joys were sadly overlooked by the constant stream of couples taking their wedding photos, it is a good photos spot.

It's time for #bamboo! (erm, when isn't it??!)

Lots of whip-like culms of Schizostachyum dumetorum emerge from the low hillside vegetation near Shek O.

S. dum is often seen under the canopy elsewhere in HK, but here its really a notable component of the vegetation. #Hongkong #hills #countryside

I am guessing (and hoping) that this is some sort of seaweed, rather than something once man-made. Seen at To Tat Wan today, there was a line of them in various states of in/de-flation at tide level on the beach.

An ID would be v. welcome if you know, many thanks in advance! #seaweed #Hongkong

I was really happy to come across wild ginger, Alpinia spp (semi-educated guess, or is it a Zingiber?), from the Zingiberaceae, in flower today in Shek O. So lovely to see the flowers on plants in situ, and in the sunshine!

Here's a pic of what I think are Bismarkia palms growing in the Sun Yat Sen park by the harbourside in Western district.

They're very striking in the bright #sunshine, and add quite a bit extra to the park.🌞

What's the chance of seeing two
@cunardline.bsky.social vessels together in HK? Cool, huh?

MS Queen Elizabeth (front) and MS Queen Anne line up at Kai Tak cruise terminal earlier today.

Are they here together for a special event or is it a happy coincidence?🤔😀
