My 2 favourite books are "The Last Valley" by Martin Windrow and "A Savage War of Peace: Algeria 1954-1962 by Alistair Horne. Keen interest in history of Northern Ireland during the Troubles, Falklands war and the battle of Rourke's Drift.

It's gonna end up being Sheridan, Speers and Ferguson complaining about how cancel culture is destroying Western civilization.
A good reminder that cultural power - like all power in any area - is exercised by those who do it if they choose to, and not by those who presume to police and administer it.
Didn't take long to need an update. Marian Wilkinson is out as well.

Well over half now of the "big names" the Festival wanted to highlight to people thinking about buying tickets.

BBC journalists have been banned from describing the kidnapped Venezuelan leader as having been kidnapped.

Gen Z and the Millennials don't watch mainstream TV news and they don't read newscomau and they are the biggest bloc of voters at the next Federal election. I know who is going to win the next election and it's not the Coalition.
Just saw one of those "sports stars join call for RC" posts on instagram (Grant Hackett, newscomau), and decided to check what the commenters thought.

Not lefties on x, not the political class, but the people who comment on insta (and no, this is not a scientific method)...

Fixed the mother-in-law's LG dishwasher today. Error code AE indicating water pooling somewhere in the bottom of the dishwasher triggering the float switch. Had to drain all the pooled water by tipping the unit forward at a 45 degree angle.
Strongly suspect the drain hose was backfeeding somehow.

Don't let anyone tell you that New York City doesn't matter to people who don't live there.

NYC stands as America's shining beacon, the place where anything is possible.

That's the reason Democrats & Republicans tell you it doesn't matter, because they know that their time is over if you care.

Most of the things that we take for granted in the modern era rely on technology that would have existed only in science fiction in the pre-transistor era. Indistinguishable from magic.
Here’s a thing I learned today: the metal-oxide semiconductor transistor is the most manufactured thing in history. One analyst *7 years ago* reckoned more than 13,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 had been made (more than there are stars in the Milky Way).

Oh look, that fucking shriveled gnome Johnny Howard ignored advice in 2005 from both Defence and Foreign Affairs Ministers against sending special forces troops to Afghanistan. Hopefully this is the year I get to buy champagne and piss on this war criminal's grave.

Gotta say this is the real shit. Everyone born after 2000 thinks that everything that happened before their birth is ancient history.
Gonna start referring to anything from 1970-1999 as “The late 1900s” and see what happens.

Volume off, still immediately recognised the song from Mahalia's facial expressions and movements. Unbelievably talented family.
What a year. Like every year, there were highs and lows, and like every year, we celebrated the highs with family and music. That same music and my beautiful family helped me make it through any lows that came our way. Thank you all for sharing this life with us.

Had to edit the link after adding the article to Instapaper for some reason. Odd.

The paradox of American capitalism is that it is fueled by inequality and entitlement. Those who have feel entitled to having more because capitalism; those that do not are angry at being denied their birthright as Americans and blame whoever the current "other" is for said deprivation.
I think about this a lot

A Hampton Inn in Asheville just canceled my family's reservation because our address (incorrectly) showed Asheville—and the hotel bars locals within 50 miles.

When I asked why, they said, "because of our homeless population," adding that most hotels here have similar policies.

This is outrageous.

This is a disgraceful performance from Michael McCormack.

Imagine if Kim Beazley had behaved like this after Port Arthur.

Just disgusting. McCormack should be writing his resignation from Parliament today.
