Assistant Head. English Teacher. Former social media type. Footballing midfield general.
Thank you to the team at Totteridge Academy for hosting a lot of visitors including me yesterday. Hearing the transformation over the last 5 years was inspirational and the impact upon the outcomes for disadvantaged students and their admission pledge is my kind of school.

The more this kind of stuff can be fine for the profession, the better. Absolutely belting.

Seeing how trusts implement IC at scale; hearing an optimistic chat from @saysmiss.bsky.social, @samfr.bsky.social; and eating popcorn with @alexgingell.bsky.social and Ollie Lovell whilst watching model @priteshraichura.bsky.social - the inaugural @steplab.bsky.social conference was a blast.

Interesting wishlist from @frankwnorris.bsky.social and @jonnyuttley.bsky.social:
- add contextual factors to Progress 8
- sort out school admissions
- stop Key Stage 3 being narrowed / shortened

Three ticks from me.
🎱 'P8 is unfair to many hard-working schools, lets questionable performance go unchallenged, and hampers efforts to get under the bonnet of school improvement'

Progress 8 is a deeply flawed way to hold schools to account
Any reform of school accountability must include changing a headline measure that acts as a perverse incentive

Of all the books I've read this year, @joshpd.bsky.social 's 'Responsive Coaching' has been the best. Thought-provoking, research-informed and actionable, it is a must for anyone linked to PD.

So sad about this. @teacherdevtrust.bsky.social is a brilliant organisation. It will continue to do great work and have impact but it’s a loss to this bit of the system
❌ One of the government’s lead providers of national professional qualifications (NPQs) will quit the scheme – claiming its ability to support schools 'as effectively and impartially as possible' has been 'constrained' by relying on taxpayer cash

NEW on the blog! Adam Lewis, one of our amazing NPQ facilitators, asks 'where has learning about leadership gone wrong?' In examining how the NPQ curricula have changed, Adam looks at how our understanding of school leadership has evolved:

New blog post. Final part of my series on assessment in history. Here I offer suggestions to help minimise the undesirable messages we communicate through assessment and to amplify the authentic voice of the subject. #UKEd #UKTeaching #HistoryEducation occamshairdryer.wordpress.com/2024/08/25/a...
