For context US imports 59 percent of fresh fruit and 35 percent of fresh vegetables (excluding potatoes, sweet potatoes, and mushrooms) according to USDA - this has been growing since NAFTA 2008 - will new tariffs reverse this trend? Or result in poorer diets for Americans?

Very sad to hear about Alan's passing. I was privileged, as one of his many PhD students, to have been treated as an extended member of Alan's family. I will always be grateful for Alan's support that helped to shape my career, and fondly remember his humour, he kindness and wisdom.
We are saddened to learn that Professor Alan McCarthy, a long-time member of the Microbiology Society, which he joined in 1978, and Professor at the University of Liverpool, sadly passed away in January 2025. You can read his full obituary here:
