Teacher. Husband. Father. I love books and thinking about the eventual heat death of the Universe. Go Hawks!

Accidentally coined the phrase, "Even a gas lit lamp provides illumination," and I think it says a lot about the world at the moment.

*sigh*

Anyway, just create. Write shit, draw shit, build whatever you want, that's the important part.

There's no be-all end-all formula for the Perfect Work.

Just be YOU. No one can ever create what YOU create b/c it's you making it, and you are the only you.

"The simple narrative taught in every history class
Is demonstrably false and pedagogically classist
Don't you know the world is built with blood?
And genocide and exploitation
The global network of capital essentially functions
To separate the worker from the means of production."

It's currently on my TBR list. I've followed Jonathan Haidt's work for years, and every interview I see him give about this book moves it higher on my list.

@jonbecker.bsky.social would love to hear your perspective on how students' use of technology and social media has "changed the game" with education.

The problems we face as a society are not isolated. Social media is a known cause of increasing political polarization and extremism. Perhaps banning exposure to online spaces in young people is a way of bringing some semblance of sanity back to our world.

Our report explains that while the major tech platforms may not cause partisan hatred in the first instance, they do exacerbate the problem, which has dire consequences for our democracy.

Australia wants to ban kids from social media—does the U.S. have the political momentum to even consider this as a possible solution? What would it take, in the face of everything else, to convince people this is an issue that needs solutions?

Australia wants to ban kids from social media. Will it work?
The government has just tabled laws to block access to under-16s - but the proposal is divisive.

We can talk all day about "how things used to be" or "whose responsibility it is," but ultimately, we are going to have to address this issue and find realistic and viable solutions to fix this problem.

Even genuine, in-person interactions between teenagers, are mediated by technology and social media. They're showing each other their phones, gaming, or talking about who posted what. As a society, are we okay with profit-driven companies having so much control over our children's culture and lives?

Showed a movie in class today. Four out of five students were on their phones the whole time. In ten years of teaching, I have never seen tech addiction like this. We need more serious conversations about technology's effects on our children, especially where school is involved.

A friendly reminder: we all die at the end of this.

So...

Take a deep breath. Relax. Laugh at a fart joke.
Please be nice to each other.

We’re all doing our best.

Anyone who wants to be a diplomat should first be required to raise a toddler. Nothing will prepare someone to negotiate peace in the Middle East like leaving the house in the morning (or bath time).
