In the United States of America, this is happening
According to litigators, on Tuesday, at one detention center in Texas, ICE gathered together 1 Vietnamese, 1 Lao, and 4 other people in detention and ordered them to sign paperwork agreeing to be sent to Libya.

All 6 refused, so ICE handcuffed them and threw them into solitary.

I feel like we need to keep saying this because it’s so insane: This is a legal U.S. resident who has been detained for over a month now for his political opinions.
The Department of Homeland Security denied Mahmoud Khalil permission to attend the birth of his first child, who was delivered at a New York hospital on Monday, according to emails reviewed by The New York Times.

Mr. Khalil, a permanent resident detained in Louisiana, had requested a monitored furlough for the birth. His request was denied in less than an hour.

I’m reading @davidenrich.bsky.social’s very good book Murder the Truth about the legal campaign against free speech and just as I suspected this seems to stem from men being exposed for how they treat women and deciding we shouldn’t have democracy because of the few people criticizing them for it

A fool that mistakes history as a guide, but a bigger fool still who doesn't acknowledge its trends. The Wiemar Republic seems analogous, yet the fast pace of information of our age compresses time; it becomes an exponential trajectory towards outcomes of an authoritarianism

Just a reminder how classic what we're seeing is:
1. redefine a group as a threat to civilization
2. reduce legal protections that they enjoy
3. abuse, threaten, harm, and/or relocate them
4. dismiss/ignore concerns about abuses and harms from the process
5. repeat steps 2-4, escalating each time
Confession that due process is or should be optional according to the vice president

I'm going to have to add a paragraph to this book on the Civil Rights Division in the 1960s that informs readers that, originally, the CRD fought tirelessly for diversity, filed countless lawsuits to secure equity and showed up at segregated institutions to demand inclusion.
"Diversity is discrimination" is literally Orwellian language, like "war is peace, hate is love, slavery is freedom."

We've seen videos like this before, but usually when you see a tearful wife pleading with the kidnappers who have taken her husband, she's not talking to the U.S. president
Abrego Garcia's wife: "I will not stop fighting until I see my husband alive. Kilmar, if you can hear me, stay strong. God hasn't forgotten about you. Our children are asking when you will come home ... they miss their dad so much."

This country is becoming unrecognizable. What we’re seeing is state-funded fear. We’ve warned people: keep filming, go live on social media so these moments are documented and shared. This wasn’t a case involving masked ICE agents—but that’s happening too.

Just so we’re clear, everybody calling Kilmar Abrego Garcia a “terrorist” or a “gang member” are lying, and they know they’re lying, and they repeat it for purposes of confusing people who don’t follow this stuff closely into accepting what was done to him.

We've reached the point in our descent into fascism where the Jewish governor's house getting firebombed on Passover by a guy trying to bash his head in with a sledgehammer is overshadowed by the story of the President saying he wants to build foreign gulags for US citizens.

In less than 3 months, the Trump regime:

- Centralized all the government’s information on you

- Claims the right to deport legal residents—including citizens—without due process

- Has kidnapped and jailed people for their expressed beliefs

- Forced opposition lawyers to “bend the knee”

It’s time to start paying attention to prisoners rights.

It’s how our country continued slavery and labor exploitation and unequal representation in politics.

now is the time to fight for the equal human dignity and citizenship of all people, including those who are incarcerated.

Two weeks ago I did a thread on how the Founding Fathers declared independence from the crown for behaving literally the same way as the Trump administration.

It's getting worse and Americans need to connect today's events to this founding document.
I just re-read the full Declaration of Independence. It's the most illuminating and depressing thing I've read in a while. Highly recommend folks give it a read.

Many — if not most — of the complaints levied against King George are indistinguishable from those brought against President Trump today.
