One of the most traumatic days of my life. They rolled the AV carts into home room so we could all watch.
On this day in 1986, seven astronauts aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger — Ellison S. Onizuka, Mike Smith, Christa McAuliffe, Dick Scobee, Greg Jarvis, Ron McNair and Judy Resnik — died when the spacecraft broke apart 73 seconds into its launch.

FYI: Dems in the senate can't defund ICE. ICE is funded by the Big Ugly Bill. Shutting down DHS on this vote wouldn't touch ICE, but it would shut down FEMA, TSA, Coast Guard, etc. Shutting down ICE requires taking back Congress in the midterms. Dismantling DHS requires the White House in 2028.

Sometimes I pretend I live in a country that elected Al Gore, led on climate change, then elected women, people of color and avoided Afghanistan and Iraq. Sigh.

A Black man was killed by ICE (off duty) in Los Angeles on New Year’s Eve. And like Renée Good, he was an American citizen. But most people have not heard about Keith Porter.

I need y’all to realize this. Black people experience this lack of visibility all the time when it comes to being victims.

A Black female prosecutor + a high-class madam = a quiet alliance to take down a powerful man in 1930s New York?

Exactly the kind of elegant, dangerous chaos we’ll always make time for. Off to pre-order it now: https://f.mtr.cool/uhszjwcvid #BookSky #SpinstersReads #affiliate
A Pair of Aces
Check out A Pair of Aces - A gripping novel about two trailblazing women on opposite sides of the law—a prosecutor and a madam—who team up to bring down notorious mob boss Lucky Luciano in 1930s New York, from the New York Times bestselling authors of the million-copy bestseller The Personal Librarian.

Eunice Carter, assistant district attorney for the City of New York and Manhattan’s first Black female prosecutor, has her sights set on the one and only Lucky Luciano, head of New York City’s five largest organized crime families. Other prosectors have tried to bring down Lucky, but they’ve all focused on the crime syndicate’s traditional businesses—bootlegging, gambling, loan sharking, and drug dealing—or tax evasion. No one has thought to approach the mob through its hand in prostitution. Until Eunice. But she can’t get Luciano alone.

Polly Adler has worked long and hard to build up her high-class brothel business. Her client list is filled with well-known names, both the famous and the infamous, who all know her booze is top-notch, her music first-rate, her food exquisite, and her girls the best. But Lucky has gone too far, putting her girls in danger, and Polly finally sees the chance to end his reign once and for all.

Together, Eunice and Polly fashion a case utilizing a network of women. Bridging the enormous divide between them and risking their own lives, they assemble evidence bit by bit, under the nose of the man they’re trying to convict. It is this very alliance—of two women from vastly different worlds—that launches the most sensational trial New York City has ever seen. by Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray on Bookshop.org US!

Before carols were polite and holidays were tidy, winter belonged to the strange and the brave.

Mari Lwyd roamed Welsh villages, daring households to match her wit. Lose the rhyme battle, lose the snacks. Win… and still lose the snacks, probably.

Would you let them in?

We pulled a Christmas tarot card for you this morning and got The Star ⭐

AKA: hope after the mess.
After the tower fell.
After “well… now what?”

No hustle, no manifesting spreadsheets — just quiet reassurance.
Gentle healing.
Faith that doesn’t shout.

What are you still hoping for, even softly?

The common thread? Letting your brain unclench.
