I've been thinking about the role the furry community plays in people's lives. For a lot of people, it functions as an extended family and fills some of the role church used to play vis-a-vis providing community, especially since so many millennial queers in particular have a religious trauma.

I struggle to switch tracks for my attention over the course of a day. I work well when I can sink my train of focus into one thing and that's all my meaningful work for a day. I think this is related to neurodivergence and why I don't take small commissions (like under a couple hundred bucks).

I think the complicated thing is that, with creative work, it's often actually more productive to work less sometimes and do whatever replenishes your creative drive. Bursts of energy come where you get half of the week's work done in one day. Often that work is better quality, too.

you may have heard about a government shutdown over a political fight on saving healthcare benefits. well, in case you didn't think you knew anyone who'd be affected, healthcare assistance covers *more than half* of the cost of my plan. makes a *huge* difference for me. just one datapoint.

Here's the thing: It is going to continue to be confusing for people that a language model can generate text and seem to talk and reason and think in response to their inputs. People don't have anywhere in their mental models of the world for something that can do that and isn't conscious.

as a semi-expert in AI* I find fear-and-trembling discussions about a possible superintelligence that want to take over from humans to be a frustrating misdirection of concern. The real concern should be how people with power wield these tools, and what people choose to do with them.
