New: I can confirm hasty US-Russia proposal being pushed to Ukrainians via Dmitriev-Witkoff to Umerov. It would amount to Ukraine’s capitulation, with people familiar saying it’s Kremlin’s maximalist demands.
-Ukraine army cut 1/2
-Give up certain weapons
-Give up Donbas
-Zelensky displeased

This morning, The Bell’s Alexander Kolyandr and Alexandra Prokopenko outline how sanctions are really biting the broader Russian economy and the limits of Chinese-Russian "friendship”:

New sanction worries
Lukoil’s difficulty in disposing of its foreign assets has captured global headlines, but it is far from the only sign that sanctions are causing more and more problems in the Russian economy.

Maybe I’m paranoid but the person inside of me who lived in Russia watches American journalists share all their impulsive thoughts about Trump online in real time and start to wonder why they aren’t self-censoring more. It’s terrible, I know.

This morning I spoke with a Ukrainian whose home town is only 4km from the front. Half the population remains, including elderly, kids. People simple cannot afford to leave and have nowhere to go. She is an experienced English teacher now cleaning a doctor’s office, applying for permanent residency.

There is a lot of noise about Putin's ability to continue to wage war. @thebellio.bsky.social takes apart the real economic data, which shows signs of wobbling as non-performing loans rise. The Bell's new Substack, Inside the Rusian Economy, is free to subscribe (link in posts):
"By the start of October, the proportion of non-performing loans made up 12.9% of all outstanding unsecured consumer debt."

"Russia, as it has elsewhere in Ukraine, struck evacuees with drones. This indiscriminate killing of civilians in cars and on bicycles has come to be known in Ukraine as 'human safaris.' Systematic attacks on humanitarian convoys have made aid delivery impossible."
What a sad/incredibly important piece of journalism. If there is one thing we do as reporters--it's to document terrible moments in history that must be remembered, written down in detail & shared. Thank you Tyler Hicks and your team for this vital work. (Free link)

It was another horrific night in Kyiv.

Vienna is closing its last remaining arrival center for Ukrainians on Dec 31.

Russia continues to target Ukraine’s utilities meaning very likely ongoing, widespread electricity & heating cuts this winter.
