Climate scientist working for climate justice. Sailor on the side.

Topics: plastics, waste, carbon accounting, methane, zero waste, plastic credits, chemical recycling, incineration, and just transition. At GAIA and UC Berkeley.

Opinions my own etc.

This is how it's done. If incumbent Democrats won't do the job, their primary challengers can and will use this to make sure someone else does
The Republican Congress has chosen to give away its authority and power and now we are being told Trump plans to occupy Venezuela. We don't cry for Maduro. We demand the following of our laws and Constitution. He is already threatening Mexico and Cuba will be next. Ann Wagner is silent.

Yes, this is exactly the time to demand Democrats "do something."

They can denounce Trump's actions as unconstitutional. They can state that he must be impeached and removed. They can make clear that all involved will be held accountable.

These are the core duties of a role they all signed up for.

"A woman dressed as a pink Power Ranger hacked a dating site for far-right extremists. She deleted the entire site, but first she made users fall in love with AI bots she ran, thus obtaining information about them. Over 8,000 far-right profiles have now been mapped."

So much of modern parenting is just fighting off capitalism: saying no to a constant barrage of junk food, TV, video games, sweets, drugs, cheap toys, plastic clothes, etc that are being pushed at children. It's exhausting.

You probably heard the US admin is threatening to break up the National Center for Atmospheric Research: but did you know they already froze funding for the 9 regional Climate Science Adaptation Centers? From tracking invasives to helping tribes with drought, here's why the CASCs matter ⬇️
From invasive species tracking to water security – what’s lost with federal funding cuts at US Climate Adaptation Science Centers
The people who manage America’s aquifers, wetlands, shorelines and recreation areas rely on federal science as they face new and rising risks in a changing climate.

Great thread
One thing 2025 made clear: Durable progress on climate in the US will require structural reform to our corrupted political systems. Otherwise, steps forward will always be vulnerable to the bloody clawbacks we saw this year. A political strategy that doesn't center system reform is not "pragmatic."

$100m of solar panels saves a country 30 years of gas imports at 2024 prices for the same 1.5TWh of electricity generated

That's a $3b saving in gas imports for each $100m of solar deployed

Another one of my charts of the year

It’s hard to remember among the avalanche of scandals but this is the firm that threw the 2016 election. At the end of the day, no public accountability, just money moving between billionaires.

Such an important point. Financiers build carbon markets while ignoring the science — including uncertainties.
In the latest Global Carbon Budget, the estimate of the ocean carbon sink was increased by 0.8 Gt of CO₂ due to methodological changes.

Each mCDR deployment aims to remove a tiny fraction of that, so if people think we have the methodology to do proper MRV for mCDR right now, they're delusional. 🌊

Absolutely right.

AI might be able to summarize (poorly) what we currently know, but a major goal of historical research is to find the hidden surprises out there.

Let me illustrate …
Not a historian but like to research. The AI might summarize what I'm looking for, but it doesn't find what I'm *not* looking for. The book on the shelf next to the one I wanted. The insight in chapter 6 based on the quote I needed from chapter 4.

Yet, ICE claims her documents are “not authentic” and has held her in immigration detention for days.

NSF is about to dismantle NCAR at Russell Vought's direction to protect the fossil fuel industry. It's hard to communicate just how much NCAR does, so let's take a look: I've never worked at NCAR, and I've worked with NCAR researchers once ever. What scientific discoveries has NCAR made possible? 👇
December 17, 2025 at 4:14 AM
Resistance from Congress will be important especially as this should end up in the courts.
Key misunderstanding I want to get ahead of: NCAR isn't really a government agency like NIH or NSF. It's one of the largest NSF grants in history, and is given to a non-profit org called UCAR, whose job is to make NCAR exist (www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/...). That means the buck stops with NSF right now

This is just horrific. Inestimable loss to climate science just when we need it the most.
Another insane move from the Trump regime.

One of NCAR's contributions to climate science is the development of the Community Earth System Model (CESM), which is used by researchers worldwide. Here's a simulation of air-sea CO₂ fluxes from CESM.
