What the Alberta government just did should worry all Canadians.

When they legislated striking teachers back to work, they went a step further:

They used the notwithstanding clause.

This is part of a worrying trend.

@emmettmacfarlane.com helped me break it down:

Woohoo! Finally!
Good news 💜

For workers who’ve been on strike for months, worried for their families & future.

For students who’ve struggled without EAs.

For parents who’ve had to stay home or go to court for their kids.

For school staff who’ve worked hard to keep schools going.

Premier Smith last year:
"I think that people would be very upset with me if we delivered a tax cut and then had a deficit"

"My overriding goal is to keep our first promise which is to make sure we stay in balanced budget"

What changed? Needed to distract from a scandal?

As kids in schools across Alberta are learning in schools that aren’t properly cleaned because Smith won’t pay a living wage…

She’ll be speaking at an org that Wikipedia says “has been accused of promoting fascism, racism, sexism & anti-LGBT politics.”

How can we trust Danielle Smith when she spent taxpayer dollars to travel to the states and support that orange Russian troll. She doesn’t have the best interest of Albertans at heart or Canada. Danielle Smith is a TRAITOR!

As thousands of education workers prepare to go on strike, don’t let the UCP distract from how we got here.

Over 4000 students in Edmonton Public Schools are unfunded by the UCP. Alberta has the lowest per-student funding in the country.

The UCP will blame school boards.

But this is on the UCP.

Did you know that wages in Alberta are the slowest growing in Canada? And that we have the lowest minimum wage in the country? And that thousands of Albertans haven’t seen a pay increase in years?

But do you know who the UCP gave a raise to today?

Themselves.
